NOVA CLASSICAL ACADEMY Latin Essentials Level at Nova Curriculum Kindergarten-Grade 2 Latin Vocabulary: 20 minutes each week of vocabulary units including animal names, colors, numbers and counting, classroom terms, etc. Grade 3 Introductory Latin I Minimus: Starting Out in Latin (all, ch. 1-12) (supplemented with grammar chants and additional translations) Includes parts of speech, noun and verb endings, and translation. Culture topics include family, school, travel, and the Roman Army. Grade 4 Introductory Latin II Minimus Secundus: Moving On in Latin (all, ch. 1-12) (supplemented with grammar chants and additional translations) Builds on grammar and culture learned in 3rd grade and also includes infinitives, impersonal verbs, pronouns, and more complex translations. Additional culture topics include the lives of soldiers, Greece, special occasions and holidays. Grade 5 Latin I Oxford Latin I (Chapters 1-14) Grammar and translation starts anew with the Oxford series. Grammar includes memorizing and knowing how to use noun and verb endings, declining nouns and conjugating verbs, infinitive, imperatives, pronouns, prepositional phrases and subordinate clauses. History and culture lessons follow the life of the poet Horace in his childhood. From here, grammar and culture builds on skills learned in 5th grade until students attain the skills to read original Latin literature in level IV.
