The Leycester Family of Tabley Isabelle Leycester married John Glegge of Gayton. This pair are the ancestors of Michael Gregory 1. Isabella’s genealogical record is outlined in Ormerod’s “A History of Cheshire and the County Palatine” (pp.618-26), on which this report is primarily based. The Leycesters of Tabley are therefore direct ancestors of Michael Gregory. The earliest recorded Leycester ancestor was Sir Nicholas Leycester. He was Seneschal to Henry Lacey, Earl of Lincoln and Constable of Cheshire. Sir Nicholas married Margaret de Denbigh in 1276. She was the widow of Robert de Denbigh and the daughter of Geoffrey Dutton (ancestor to the Warburtons of Arley). They had two sons: Roger Leycester, Seal of Sir Roger Leycester the eldest and heir; and John Leycester who became Vicar of Wallesey in Wirrall. Sir Nicholas held the township of Nether-Tabley and the Manors of Wethale and Hield, through his wife. He also held lands in Adwick, near Doncaster and in Wath, near Adwick. Sir Nicholas died in 1295. Roger, from whom Michael Gregory is descended, lived at his Manor of Wethale in Aston, near Picmere. He married Isabel (father unknown). With Isabel, he had a number of children. The eldest (and from whom Michael Gregory is descended) was Nicholas Leycester. His siblings were Roger Leycester and a sister, Margaret Leycester, who married Adam de Molesworth in 1323 (Adam was Sheriff of Flint). Roger died in 1349. Roger’s son, Nicholas Leycester, married Mary Mobberley in 1322. She was the daughter of William Mobberley of Mobberley. A brother of Mary was Sir Raufe de Mobberley. Nicholas and Mary had a number of children. The first born, and from whom Michael Gregory was descended, was John Leycester. He had a younger brother, Raufe Leycester, from whom the Leycesters of Toft are descended2. He also had a sister, Elizabeth, the second wife of William Manwaring of Over-Pever, the elder, from whom are descended the Manwarings of Over Pever. Nicholas Leycester died in 1349. John Leycester (b. ca 1340), the son of Nicholas and Mary, served in the wars against France under John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster in 1373. John built the Manor Hall of Nether-Tabley ca 1380. He married Joan Touchet, daughter of Robert Touchet of Nether Whitley and had two sons. The eldest was William Leycester (the ancestor of Michael Gregory). The younger son was called Raufe Leycester. John died in 1398. His Seal was reproduced in Ormerod and is shown left. William Leycester lived at the Manor Hall built by his father (His seal is illustrated, right). He was born around 1378, and was a Justice of the Peace in the Bucklow Hundred in the reign of Henry V. He married twice. The first wife was Agnes Dutton. This relationship produced Michael Gregory’s Leycester family ancestors. Agnes was sister to Sir Piers Dutton of Dutton, and the daughter of Edmund Dutton. William and Agnes married in 1398. They had a number of children. The heir was John Leycester (who was the grandfather of Isabel who married John Glegge). John had a number of siblings: Lawrence Leycester, Geffrey Leycester, Joan – who married Thomas Starkey (whose father was also called Thomas Starkey of Westbury) – and another daughter, Cicely, who married Thomas Masterson of Masterson near Nantwich. The second wife of William was Pillaryne, widow of Robert Massy of Hale and sister of Sir Richard Craddock. They were married in 1425. They did not have any children. William died in 1428. John Leycester, born ca 1400, William’s son, married Elizabeth Massy, daughter of Hamon Massy of Rixton, Lancashire. Their first born (and the ancestor of Michael Gregory) was John II Leycester. Other children were Hamon Leycester, who was made Parson of Mobberley in 1460; Randle Leycester; Nicholas Leycester; Henry Leycester; and William Leycester. They also had two daughters: Maud, who married Thomas Daniell (whose father was also called Thomas Daniell of Over Tabley) and Alice, who married Richard Legh, son of John Legh of High Legh de West Hall. John Leycester died in 1462, leaving Elizabeth a widow. John II Leycester married Margery Legh, daughter of John Legh of High Legh de West Hall and had nine sons: Thomas, Hamon, Bryan, Martin, John, Sir Lawrence, Piers, Roger and Godfrey. He also had a daughter, Isabel, who is Michael Gregory’s genealogical connection to this family as indicated above. The descendants of John II Leycester (and indirect ancestors of Michael Gregory) are further detailed in Ormerod and, along with the pedigree of the Leycesters of Toft, are reproduced below.
