The Brereton Family of Brereton, Cheshire William de Bowyer of Knypersley, living in the reign of King Henry VII, was married to Katherine, the daughter of Sir Andrew Brereton of Brereton. This couple were the 15th great grandparents of Michael Gregory, leading down through the line of Bowyer1 four generations earlier, when Hannah Bowyer (b. ca 1600) married Michael Gregory’s direct ancestor, William Glegg of Gayton (b. 1589)2. Sir Andrew Brereton, a younger son, (born 1438; died 1495) was the eventual heir of his father, Sir William Brereton (d. 1484), the Baron of Malpas and Lord of Egerton and Brereton. Sir William married Phillippa Hulsa, the daughter of Sir Hugh de Hulse of Raby. In 1396, Sir Hugh was made Chief Justice of Chester at 40 Marks per annum. He was a Judge of the Kings Bench 1388 and 1398. He died in 1404. He was married to Margaret Domville. Sir Hugh’s father was Hugh de Huls who was married to Ellen Bruen of Picmere. This Hugh’s father was Sir William de Huls and he was married to Sybil Norbury. Returning to the Brereton family, the father of Sir William was William de Brereton VIII. He died with his father, Sir William de Brereton, at the Battle of Harfleur in 1402. He was married to Alice Corbet (d.1458). For a further five generations the Brereton family (see attached pedigree) line ascends through William to Ralph de Brereton II, Lord of Brereton (occurs 1275). His father was William de Brereton II. He married Margery de Thornton. The father of Sir William II was Ralph de Brereton I, whose father was William de Brereton I, and grandfather, Ralph de Brereton I (occurs ca. 1100). It is said that the Brereton family, Lords of the Manor of Malpas, were founded by the younger son of Gilbert de Venables, from whom they are descended: this supposition is supported by the similarity of arms that they bore, which differ on the tincture. A full pedigree is given in George Ormerod’s “A History of Cheshire and the County Palatine” and also in Burke’s Peerage. The family was raised to the Peerage in the 17th century, but is now extinct in the senior line. Robert, Lord Clive of Plassey (Clive of India), the present Earls of Powys and Earls of Plymouth, are descended from this family.
