The Badlesmere Family of Kent William de Bohun1, a direct ancestor of Michael Gregory, married Elizabeth de Badlesmere in 1338 in Hereford. Elizabeth was the Countess of Northampton, and had been born in 1313 in Badlesmere, Kent. She died on 8 June 1356 and was buried at Black Friars, Middlesex, London. Elizabeth’s father was Bartholomew de Badlesmere, Baron of Badlesmere. Her mother was Margaret de Clare. Bartholomew was born in 1275 at Chilham, Kent, and christened at the Castle, Badlesmere. Bartholomew fought in the English army both in France and Scotland during the later years of the reign of Edward I. He also served in the Welsh campaign. In 1307, he became governor of Bristol Castle. He was also summoned to Parliament in the 7th year of the reign of King Edward II. Lord Badlesmere was deputed, with Otto de Grandison and others, Ambassador to the Court of Rome, and in the following year, upon the death of Robert de Clifford, he obtained a grant of the custody of the Castle of Skylon in Yorkshire. Edward II appointed him Steward of the Household. Bartholomew Badlesmere made a compact with some other noblemen to gain supreme influence in the Royal Council. Although very hostile to Earl Thomas of Lancaster, Badlesmere helped to make peace between the King and the Earl in 1318, and was a member of the Middle Party which detested both Edward’s supporters and his enemies. The King’s conduct however drew him into opposition with Edward II, and he had already joined Edward’s enemies when, in October 1321, his wife, Margaret de Clare, refused to admit Queen Isabella to her husband’s castle at Leeds in Kent. The King assaulted the castle, seized and imprisoned Lady Badlesmere in the Tower of London, and civil war began. After the defeat of the Earl of Lancaster at the Battle of Boroughbridge, Badlesmere was captured and hanged, drawn and quartered at Canterbury on 14 April 1322. His head was displayed on a pole at Burgate Wall. His son and heir Giles died without children in 1338. His wife was eventually released following the intervention of Lord Roos and others. She then went to a nunnery outside of London, living on a pension. Lord Roos married her daughter, Margery. His parents were Guncelin (als. Gunselm) Badlesmere who was the Justice of Chester and Joan FitzBernard (b. ca 1234; d. 1310). Guncelin was born about 1244 and died in 1301 at Badlesmere. He had been a rebel under Henry III, for which he was excommunicated by the Pope, but later was rehabilitated. In 1282, he was on the expedition to Wales and in the following year, served in Gascony in the French wars. Guncelin and Joan had married ca 1274. Guncelin’s father was Bartholomew, whose own father was also called Guncelin, like his grandson. Guncelin the elder had been born about 1205 at the Castle, Tong, Kent. The father of this Guncelin the elder was again another Bartholomew born at Tong ca 1181. He died in 1256. His father was also called Bartholomew born in 1145 at the castle, Tong, and who died after 1189. Leeds Castle in Kent, which Bartholomew Badlesmere was Castellan of has been described as the loveliest castle in the world. A number of images below show the Castle as it looks today.
