Bridge Project GUIDELINES FOR ROMAN BRIDGES

BRIDGE PROJECT
NAME__________________DATE DUE: June 12th
In science, we learn how to solve problems. We learn the concepts of design,
which are 1) to identify a problem, 2) design a solution, 3) meet specifications, 4)
analyze a prototype, 5) test the prototype, and 6) evaluate for redesign. In this
project, you will construct a bridge that can bear weight, and span a distance safely,
allowing for safe travel. You will defend your design by explaining why you think
it is the best design
GUIDELINES FOR BRIDGES
1. You may use up to 80 craft sticks. ( popsicle) You may use less. Please to not exceed
80.
2. You may use white or yellow carpenter’s glue.
3. Your bridge needs to span a gap 12 inches wide.
4. A track or road surface needs to be built so that a small car (Matchbox) can safely make
passage across the bridge.
5. Your goal is to build a strong bridge. We will test them for strength on June 12th.
6. The sticks may not be cut in any way. Only whole sticks may be used.
7. Your bridge must be at least 2 and 1/4 inches wide.
8. No laminated beam more than six sticks thick may be used.

_______ TOTAL * 10 extra credit points will also be given to the person who designs the
most aesthetic (best looking) bridge.

Challenges and Technical Difficulties
List at least 2 problems you encountered while building or testing your bridge and what you did to solve them.
Describe the problem. You may also use drawings.
Problem #1
Explain how you solved this problem.
