typical entry is (e66/p132/d234/f257). When different page numbers are given in different
indexes or references, both are shown eg (e66/p29p132/d234/f257). Prefix codes are: e =
enumeration district; s = sheet number; p = page number; d = dwelling number; f = family
number. Note "s" and "p" are used interchangeably for sheet/page number. See Soundex

Frank Dempster Sherman (1860-1916). He did more work on the genealogy of the Sherman
families in America, who came from England, than any other person up to his time. He
prepared a 4x6" file card on each person and filed them alphabetically, and then assigned a
number to each card. There are 4,570 cards. His original cards are retained in the New York
Public Library. They are also available on two reels of 35mm microfilm from any LDS/FHC,
film numbers 1405270 and 1405271 titled Sherman Genealogy.

These were taken between the US Census, eg 1854, 1864, 1874 etc. The format is basically
the same as the US Census.
A three letter code is used to designate the Michigan counties in this genealogy. The first
three letters are used for most of the counties. The exceptions are: GTE = Grand Traverse,
GTT = Gratiot, KAS = Kalkaska, MAK = Machinac, MTC = Montcalm, MTM =
Montmorency, & OSD = Oscoda. Also, GLM = Maritime activities, MIT = MI Territories &
SMI = State of Michigan. These are often combine with the following Michigan Court House
Codes.
A two letter code is used to designate the type of Court House Record: BR = birth, DR =
death, MR = marriage, ER = divorce, LR = land, NR = naturalization, PR = probate, VR =
veteran's discharge, XR = mortgage. The are often used as a suffix on the Michigan County
