PEABODY ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (PEP)
FALL 2013 OFFERINGS: September 17 – October 25, 2013
(Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays After-School)
The Peabody After-School Enrichment Program is specifically designed to augment the traditional
academic program with in-depth exposure to a variety of interesting, educational and fun topics.
All fees include supply costs. Registration is open now and will run until September 8, 2013.
Please submit your form and payment to the front office as soon as possible – class space is
limited and will fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the time has changed. The
new time for classes is 3:15-4:15.

TUESDAYS: 3:15-4:15 p.m.
DESIGN YOUR OWN “I SPY” BOOK (Grades 3-6). Instructor: Victoria Young. Location: Ms. Young’s
classroom. Inspired by the fantastic "I Spy" puzzle books, students will be planning their own imaginative scenes, gathering
and arranging materials, photographing their scenes, writing riddles, and publishing their original works in our very own "I
Spy" collection!
Fee= $120; 12 students maximum (5 minimum).
BROADCASTING AND REPORTING! (Grades 4-8). Instructor: Nona Kaplan. Location: Drama Room. Students
will learn different broadcasting terms and techniques. They will explore the tools available to make news reports through
broadcasting media such as recording film and sound. They will use their creativity and work together to produce a piece of
work that could be used for airtime.
Fee = $125; 10 students maximum (6 minimum).
BELLYDANCE BASICS! (Grades 4-8). Instructor: Joy Rayman. Location: Mr. Bricker’s classroom. Students will
learn the fundamentals of belly dance, which will include traveling steps, isolations, and various movements from slow fluid
movements to percussive movements. Movements will be combined into mini-routines. These routines will then be strung
together to form a complete dance.
Fee = $140; 15 students maximum (8 minimum).
TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS: 3:15-4:15 p.m.
JR. BROADWAY ADVENTURE (Grades 3-8). Instructor: Melissa Charles. Location: Music Room. This
course will meet two times per week to train budding performers in all aspects of musical theatre performance. Students will
learn song, dance and musical theatre performance technique as they prepare for production of a contemporary musical, The

Journey of the Noble Knarbel. *NOTE: There will be a public performance of the musical on Thursday, October 24 at 4:30 in
the Music Room.
Fee = $150 for a total of 12 classes, 20 students maximum (10 minimum) .
WEDNESDAYS: 3:15-4:15 p.m.
JEWELRY MAKING (Grades K-3). Instructor: Ruth Haske. Location: Art Room. Learn a variety of different
skills to make your own unique jewelry. Bracelets, necklaces, rings, hair accessories…….the options are endless! And that is
not all - you will also decorate and take home your very own jewelry box.
Fee= $120; 12 students maximum (4 minimum).
STORYBOOK ADVENTURES (K-3). Instructor: Melissa Charles. Location: Drama Room. Books serve as the
springboard into a theatrical adventure, giving students the opportunity to play with basic acting skills while working as a team
to bring stories to life! Exercising their natural creativity through movement, vocal work, games and improvisation, students
portray beloved storybook characters (as well as new favorites!) while gaining confidence and presence on stage.
Fee=$95; 12 students maximum, (6 minimum)
FLAG FOOTBALL (Grades 1-3). Instructor: Ryan Drago. Location: Field. Students will learn the basics of flag
football, including rules and positions. Each session will involve some practice and a game!
Fee = $95; 20 students maximum (10 minimum).
HIP HOP DANCE MIX (Grades 3 – 5). Instructor: Rachel Leonard from the Charlottesville Ballet. Location:
Music Room. Charlottesville Ballet's Hip Hop Dance Mix course allows students to explore multiple dance genres in a
combination class that covers skills in ballet, jazz, and hip hop. This class is perfect for boys and girls and introduces students
to the basics of dance with special attention to strength, musicality, and coordination.
Fee= $110; 15 students maximum (6 minimum).
GUITAR FUN-DAMENTALS (Grades 4-8). Instructor: Tolly Merrick. Location: Mr. Merrick’s classroom.
The Fun-damentals of Guitar begins with basic instruction on the instrument (parts, terminology, care). Students will learn how
to string and tune their guitars, cover the basic chords, and depending upon needs and presenting skill levels, possibly we strum,
pick, learn barre chords, and write songs. The goal is to learn, have fun, and ideally create a lasting relationship with one of
mankind's best friends: the guitar. While it is suggested that students bring their own guitars (acoustic is preferred), it is not
mandatory. Several extras are available.
Fee= $95; 6 students maximum (2 minimum).
THURSDAYS: 3:15-4:15 p.m.
SPORTS SPECTACULAR (Grades K--2). Instructor: Christian Ramirez. Location: Field. Do you love to play
sports? Then you’ll love Sports Spectacular! Each week we’ll play a different sport or game including basketball, soccer, flag
football, kickball, capture the flag, tag, and more! Get moving with games like Bump and Bite, Knights and Dragons, the

Numbers Game, and Safe Base Tag! We’ll work on teamwork, sportsmanship and fitness, all while having FUN! In inclement
weather, this class will take place in the P.E. Box.
Fee= $90; 15 students maximum (6 minimum).
THURSDAYS: 3:15-4:15 p.m. (Continued)
CAN YOU DIG IT? (Grades 3-5). Instructor: Nona Kaplan. Location: Drama Room/Outside. This course will
teach students how to interpret the wonderful world of our past environment and apply their findings to the present time.
Students will learn how to research, survey, excavate, report, and exhibit archaeological material in a fun and scientific way.
This coarse includes visuals, hands on experience, and adventure!
Fee = $125; 10 students maximum (6 minimum).
PEABODY MAKER SCOUTS (Grades 4-8). Instructor: Mike Funk. Location: Art Room. Based on the Maker
Guilds, this series of enrichment programs provide opportunities kids to make things and tinker with materials and tools to
embrace the arts, technology and science languages of self-expression. Each session will have a slightly different focus, from
woodworking and furniture building, to circuits and electrical engineering. Learn how to use tools, collaborate on projects, and
MAKE STUFF! Fall session focus to be announced soon. Participants will earn badges as they learn skills, and be connected
to a nationwide community of Maker Scouts. (No connection to Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, no political affiliation).
Fee = $85; 15 students maximum (8 minimum).
FRIDAYS: 3:15-4:15 p.m.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? (Grades 6-8). Instructor: Carrie Pledger. Location: Drama Room.
Social ballroom dancing is a great way to meet new friends while learning a life-long skill. Our goal will be to have fun
learning a variety of modern and traditional dances using both popular and classical style music. Students will choose from a
variety of dances including waltz, tango, salsa, meringue, cha-cha, swing, hustle, rumba and polka.
Fee = $120; 12 students maximum (5 minimum).
