Modern Foreign Languages at Roseburn Primary School
Policy – At Roseburn we believe that all pupils should have the opportunity to learn a
foreign language and gain knowledge about other European countries. Our aims are:




To give children an appreciation of the richness of language and gain an
understanding of its structure and how language works
To enable children to communicate simple ideas clearly in a foreign language
appropriate to their level of understanding
To raise awareness of culture and customs of other European countries
To enable children to gain experience of French or German during P6 and P7
Pupils will be encouraged to develop skills in Listening, Talking, Reading and
Writing through a varied programme of games, songs, stories and practical activities.
Homework – pupils will have weekly tasks to complete which will include learning
vocabulary, writing tasks and research.
Dictionaries – pupils will have access to these in class but it would be useful for
pupils to have one at home too.
Parental Support – we appreciate that there may not be anyone at home familiar
with the language being taught however you can support your child by


Listening to your child practising vocabulary
Pointing out similarities with the foreign language and their own language
I have received the letter giving information about the German curriculum at
Roseburn.

will have weekly homework tasks to complete. These will include:




Learning vocabulary – this will be revision of work covered in class. The
aim is to learn the vocabulary orally and if possible, the spelling.
Practising speaking - to self, family, friends, pets!
Short written tasks
Researching information about the country.
*My homework must be brought in on time and completed to the best of my ability.
*Homework should also be signed by your parent/guardian.
