To provide exposure to common urologic problems encountered from birth to 18 years including both medical and surgical patients. The elective can be tailored according to the student’s interests. To provide exposure to the urodynamics lab to learn about urodynamic studies, uroflow EMGs, and biofeedback. To provide exposure to urologic surgeries. The elective is offered at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and consists of outpatient and operative experiences. There is opportunity to attend prenatal clinics twice a month. Topics that the student will most likely be exposed to include: dysfunctional voiding, day and night time incontinence, hydronephrosis, neurogenic bladder, urinary tract infections, hematuria, kidney stones, phimosis, penile adhesions, meatal stenosis, hypospadias, undescended testicles, UPJ obstruction, vesiculoureteral reflux, hernia, hydrocele, and redundant foreskin. Formal Weekly Teaching Activities: Scheduled Wednesday morning preoperative conference at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Thursday morning Urology grand rounds at UCONN There are other conferences which take place on a monthly or quarterly basis. Supervision: Drs. Bernstein, Ferrer, Kim, Makari, Smith, and Nelson. The supervising faculty member depends on the activities elected by each student. Facilities: Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Outpatient Clinic Urodynamics suite Operating Room UCONN Prenatal Clinic Grand Rounds Patient Population: The patients are a diverse group of children from neonates to adolescence. They have acute and chronic illnesses. They are drawn from established groups and referral sources in more than ample numbers to achieve the goals of the elective. Means by Which Student is Evaluated: At the end of each clerkship, Dr. Bernstein will meet with the other clerkship supervisors to consider the student’s performance in the selected areas of the program. This is based on the standard clerkship performance criteria. We try to focus on skills and knowledge acquired and particularly on growth during the clerkship.
