Brownfield Sites – Alternatives to ‘Dig and Dump’
Thursday 22nd April 2004, Thistle Hotel, Victoria, London
Few industries will feel the impact associated with the loss in Landfill capacity for hazardous waste greater than those
involved in Brownfield development and contaminated land remediation. From July this year, as the Landfill Directive
requirements will ban the age old practice of co-disposal, where non-hazardous and hazardous wastes are landfilled
together.
It is estimated that there will be 10-15 hazardous waste landfill sites in the UK licensed to accept these wastes. This
will in effect put an end to the ‘dig and dump’ practice for contaminated land. Costs for transportation and treatment
will increase dramatically but it will help stimulate development and use of alternative treatment and disposal
techniques.
This CIWM one day seminar will examine the potential pit falls that will be faced by those involved in development,
treatment and disposal of contaminated land and will offer advice on the new requirements for the management of
contaminated land, including alternative treatment options to disposal in landfill.
