This course will enhance students' understanding of Chinese culture and contemporary Chinese life through in-depth study of various topics and issues, such as food, recreation, and the changes of life styles. In addition to learning more vocabulary, grammar, and sentence patterns, students will also apply their Chinese speaking and writing skills to different projects via the Internet or in the real life situations. This course will be conducted primarily in Chinese. Students are encouraged to recognize both standard and simplified printed character forms in reading. Students are also expected to fully participate in oral discussion sessions in Mandarin. Student Learning Outcomes: After the completion of this course, students will be able to perform the following tasks: 1. Listening and Speaking: Apply vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation to understand details of conversation in descriptive material, fully participate in casual conversations, and give instructions and simple reports with supporting data. 2. Reading: Comprehend linkages among sentences in simple connected texts, identify key facts and some details in carefully written personal communication and in descriptive material on daily life and news events, and comprehend the use of shumianyu (grammatical elements from Classical Chinese) in modern formal writings. 3. Writing: Demonstrate sustained control of complex structures to produce routine social correspondence and write about familiar topics by means of narratives and descriptions of a factual nature, such as food preferences, recreation activities, cultural sites, and Chinese values. 4. Culture: Demonstrate awareness of the common Chinese celebrations, taboos, cuisines, courtesy in formal occasions, and China’s multi-ethnic culture. Texts: 1. JiāYóu: Chinese for the Global Community, Vol. 1, Textbook, by Jialu Xu, Fu Chen, Ruojiang Wang, and Ruiping Zhu. Cengage Learning Asia Pte Ltd. and Beijing Normal University Press, 2008. 2. Homework assignments available at bb-pcc.blackboard.com for registered students. 3. Chinese-English, English-Chinese dictionary Class Meetings: 1. Attendance and active participation is an essential course requirement. Students are expected to complete reading assignments before coming to class and be prepared to discuss them at each session. 2. Please come to class on time. Leaving early or arriving late will be considered as 1/3 class absence. 10 hours of absences may result in a lower grade by one letter grade. Fall 2011, Chnse 4 #2262, page 2 3. The instructor will not be responsible for students who are not informed of homework or do not receive handouts due to absences. It is the student's responsibility to obtain lecture notes or homework assignments from the Blackboard site (pcc.blackboard.com), from the instructor, or from other students in class. Students are not to use a prior absence as an excuse for missing subsequent work. 4. Please turn off your cellular phones during class. Quizzes, Tests and Exams: 1. There will 2 vocabulary quizzes for each lesson and one review test for each unit. The quiz is given before a new lesson is presented, and the review test follows the completion of each unit. 2. A comprehensive final exam will be given at the end of the semester. There will be no makeup for the final exam. 3. Be sure to be on time for the quizzes/tests/exam. Students who are late will not be given more time and the missed parts of the quizzes/tests/exam will not be repeated for them. 4. There will be no make-ups for quizzes. For lesson tests, if a documented emergency occurs, a student will be allowed to reschedule or make up a test. This will only be permitted ONCE (per student) per semester. A rescheduled test must be taken within one week of its original scheduled date and will receive a 10% deduction Homework and Assignments: 1. Homework assignments will be announced in class. 2. Late homework/assignments will only be accepted if submitted in the next class meeting and will receive a 10% deduction. Oral Evaluations and Group Projects: 1. For each lesson, there will be 1-2 oral evaluations during class. 2. There will be 2 group projects and presentations on cultural topics related to the lessons covered. Details of the presentations will be discussed in class. 3. Students are strongly encouraged to use diverse resources and presentation tools, such as computers, charts, and posters, etc., to deliver their presentations. Note: * Plagiarism and cheating undermine the fundamental goals of higher education and will not be tolerated.
