Description:
Chinese 4 is an intermediate course designed for students who have successfully completed
Chinese 3 or the equivalent. This course will enhance students' understanding of Chinese culture
and contemporary Chinese life through in-depth study of various topics and issues, such as food,
recreation, and the changes of life styles. In addition to learning more vocabulary, grammar, and
sentence patterns, students will also apply their Chinese speaking and writing skills to different
projects via the Internet or in the real life situations. This course will be conducted primarily in
Chinese. Students are encouraged to recognize both standard and simplified printed character
forms in reading. Students are also expected to fully participate in oral discussion sessions in
Mandarin.
Student Learning Outcomes:
After the completion of this course, students will be able to perform the following tasks:
1. Listening and Speaking: Apply vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation to understand details
of conversation in descriptive material, fully participate in casual conversations, and give
instructions and simple reports with supporting data.
2. Reading: Comprehend linkages among sentences in simple connected texts, identify key facts
and some details in carefully written personal communication and in descriptive material on
daily life and news events, and comprehend the use of shumianyu (grammatical elements
from Classical Chinese) in modern formal writings.
3. Writing: Demonstrate sustained control of complex structures to produce routine social
correspondence and write about familiar topics by means of narratives and descriptions of a
factual nature, such as food preferences, recreation activities, cultural sites, and Chinese
values.
4. Culture: Demonstrate awareness of the common Chinese celebrations, taboos, cuisines,
courtesy in formal occasions, and China’s multi-ethnic culture.
Texts:
1. JiāYóu: Chinese for the Global Community, Vol. 1, Textbook, by Jialu Xu, Fu Chen,

excuse for missing subsequent work.

is given before a new lesson is presented, and the review test follows the completion of each
