The following are questions provided by the groups presenting their research this term.... some of these (or variations WILL be on the final) What are the two types of cloud seeding and what distinguishes the two? Give a brief description of the different types of weather modification. • What is a Hurricane forecast model? • What are two advancements that helped the development of hurricane forecast models? 1. Name the two different basic categories of glacier classifications by shape and give an example of each with diagram. (see frame 18 of glacial presentation) 2. Briefly compare/contrast the Milankovitach Theory to the Snowball Earth Theory. (see frame 4-8 of glacial presentation) Explain ENSO, What is it and how does effect seasonal meteorology/climatology? How does El Nino impact fisheries along the coast of South America? Discuss the Aurora Australius or the also called Southern Lights. 2. What are some of the theories or speculations to why the Ross Ice Shelf is depleting? 3. During which months does the hole in the ozone increase and in which months does it return to normal size? 1. What are the three main problems of environmental determinism involving any country? Cultural, Political, Economical 2. Why could cultural, and economical not be effected by the environment? Mainly because countries with the same climate might have two different views on culture and their economy, and countries with totally different climate zones might agree on cultural and economical policies What atmospheric element was reported to have dramatically ridden the roller coaster of change throughout geologic time? Oxygen, Hydrogen, Sodium, Aluminum What proterozoic organism introduced as well as considerably increased atmospheric oxygen content on the earth? Butterflies, photosynthetic cyanobacteria, ostracods, fishsticks. Describe the 5 or 6 air mass types (e.g. continental polar, marine tropical etc). Describe a source region for each air mass type and describe (with an example) modification of an airmass as it flows over land with different characteristics (e.g. the warming and drying of a mP airmass as it flows over the interior US) Discuss Lake Effect snows, provide examples If I give you a standard station model , be able to describe each component of the display Describe the weather ‘signature’ of a mid latitude cyclone, and be able to recognize the wind/temp/dew point signatures of the passage of warm and cold fronts. Be able to describe ‘doppler’ RADAR... ask someone who was on the trip to HSV... what is a ‘gate to gate’ image signature? What does it signify? What is a rossby wave? How does the Rossby wave impact local weather patterns? Be able to ‘read’ a meteorological RADAR image (I might put a sample in and ask you to describe what you are seeing). SEE YOU TUESDAY NIGHT
