POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AND ADJUSTMENT DISORDER Inevitable Problems When Leaving the Armed Forces? Henry Bosanquet, Consultant Psychiatrist Duchess of Kent Barracks, Catterick Tuesday 21 April 2009 6.00pm Registration and Buffet; 6.30pm Presentation; 8.00pm Close The Village Hotel, Otley Road, Leeds For many mental health professionals there seem to be inevitable mental health challenges when people leave the armed services for a civilian life. Problems are often complex and at times we can feel insufficiently skilled to manage them. Any simple explanation for psychiatric problems in terms of military trauma on a significant scale has little basis in the evidence. This seminar will describe the overall picture as one of relatively severe adjustment and temperament problems before joining up, often mitigated by army life, then aggravated by conflicts between the demands of military and civilian life. The evening shall include a review of the cases of the 4,000 soldiers seen in the military Community Mental Health Team, Duchess of Kent Barracks, Catterick between 2002 and 2008. It is the first such project since 1916. About Our Speaker: Henry Bosanquet joined the Army in 1982, he has been a consultant psychiatrist within the armed force since 1989.
