COURSE SLO ASSESSMENT REPORT, SAC Department: Theatre Arts Course: THEA 110 Acting Fundamentals Semester: Fall Year: 2013 Faculty Member: Chris Cannon Semester: Fall Year: 2013 Semester: Institutional SLO Course SLO Method of Assessment Outcomes Assessment Plan for Implementation 1. Communication Skills A. Reading and Writing Students will be able to interpret dramatic and comedic monologue scripts through analysis. They will demonstrate analytical skills by writing acting methodology analyses, character analyses, character biographies, and scoring texts. A character autobiography written assignment which involves character analysis and scoring texts with beat sheets. An acting methodology analysis based on the course textbook and acting games and exercises explored in class. Assigning each student into separate performance groups and specific performance days to determine how each student is progressing in their understanding of applying analysis to performance. These assignments, workshops, and performance groups have proven very effective in helping the student grasp the sometimes confusing principles involved in character preparation. These approaches have resulted in a higher rate of assignment completion. Continue performance group approach and “assignment workshop” sessions where the requirements for the assignments are discussed and students receive a handout explaining the requirements in detail. Keep to a regular schedule of reminders about the assignments and the due dates at strategic points during the semester. B. Listening and Speaking Students will be able to utilize interactive listening strategies. They will be able to discuss and critique the performances by their peers, as well as evaluate their own work. Students will be able to apply various acting methodologies in the delivery of characterizations from a variety of dramatic scenarios and scripts. Practical application/experience in character development through performance exercises and acting games measured in final scene study and monologues exercises. As a result of the assignment workshops and scheduled reminders, students are improving in their ability to make the connection that the acting games and exercises expose them to methodologies necessary for preparing their monologue and scene characters. Continue performance group approach and “assignment workshop” sessions where the requirements for the assignments are discussed and students receive a handout explaining the requirements in detail. Keep to a regular schedule of reminders about the assignments and the due dates at strategic points during the semester. Reassessment Year: Outcome Plan for Implementation 2. Thinking and Reasoning A. Creative Thinking B. Critical Thinking Students will demonstrate original thought by using their imaginations when developing written character analyses for their monologue scripts. The character autobiography written assignment involves using imagination to create a personal history of the character. This history is based on information contained in the monologue and is written in the first person. This assignment has proven very effective in stimulating the student’s imagination. The assignment workshops have proven very effective in helping the student understand and accurately complete the assignments. Students will be able to identify, interpret, define, develop, and utilize character objectives, obstacles, and tactics when developing character choices. Practical application/experience using acting exercises and a written character autobiography focusing on applying objectives, obstacles, and tactics to a character performance. Combining the practical exercises with a demonstration and discussion about using beat worksheets has helped the students make the connection from the exercises to actual application in monologues performances. Continue “assignment workshop” sessions where the requirements for the assignments are discussed and students receive a handout explaining the requirements in detail. Keep to a regular schedule of reminders about the assignments and the due dates at strategic points during the semester. Continue practical exercises and demonstration and discussion sessions about using beat worksheets.
