POLICY NAME: EFFECTIVE: SUPERSEDES: 306.02 Faculty Duties and Responsibilities 02/25/2011 12/07/08; 04/04/07; 01/02/01, 03/19/03 FACULTY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Duty Days and Hours. Full-time instructors, librarians, and counselors employed on a ninemonth contract (Fall and Spring Term) shall work a minimum of 175 days. Full-time instructors, librarians, and counselors employed on a twelve-month contract shall work a minimum of 229 days. Those employed full-time for the summer shall work a minimum of 54 days. The Alabama State Board of Education requires faculty members to spend a minimum of 35 hours per week on campus, exclusive of any regularly scheduled breaks. This does not mean that every faculty member is required to be on duty seven hours a day, but it is intended to suggest that faculty have a regular schedule of instruction, student counseling and preparation. Faculty schedules must be approved by the appropriate dean and the President, and subsequently adhered to by the faculty member. Schedules shall be posted on each faculty member's office door each term. Student Records. Faculty are required to maintain accurate student records including but not limited to official course rolls, student attendance, attendance verification, and student academic records. Faculty will provide in a timely manner the necessary student records when requested. Faculty who do not accurately report attendance verification and/or notification of unofficial withdrawals may be liable for financial aid funds incorrectly issued to students. Class Load. According to State Board Policy, duties of instructors and hours involved will be determined by the President with the understanding that good professional judgment will be exercised. In considering loads, the number of preparations and the number of students should be considered as well as hours taught. No distinction will be made between day, extended day, or evening programs. Instructors are employed to provide education for those enrolled regardless of the time of day or evening. Teaching Load. Each full-time academic instructor shall teach fifteen (15) to sixteen (16) credit hours per term or the equivalent for the academic year, fall and spring semesters. The maximum number of contact hours per week for a full-time technical instructor shall be determined by the President but shall not exceed thirty (30). (State Board Policy 608.01) It is expected that full-time faculty members will be on campus five days a week in order to meet the needs of students. Classes may be assigned during any of the times the college is in session without regard to day or evening; however, Division Chairs will attempt to provide each instructor as compact a teaching day as possible. Nursing Faculty Course Load. The required workload for full-time nursing instructors will be 22-24 contact hours per term, which may include three (3) contact hours as course coordinator. Faculty typically teach 24 contact hours per term. A lighter load of 20-21 contact hours will be allowed each term for one faculty members; this lighter load will be rotated among the nursing faculty. The 22-24 contact hour workload and the lighter load rotated among faculty will permit instructors to effectively manage their teaching load, provide a realistic faculty/student contact ratio, and allow instructors to have sufficient office hours to use for course preparation, professional development and program evaluation for accreditation evaluations and visits. Equivalency Assignments. The President, at his discretion, may approve equivalency assignments based upon the nature of the assignments, the amount of time required in performance of the assignment, and service to the institution. Equivalency assignments may be made for special duty assignments which require duty time beyond what is normally expected and for which compensatory time is not permitted. The monetary compensation for a full-time instructor who teaches a reduced load of less than 15 to 16 credit hours shall be a pro rata share of the established salary schedule based upon the instructor's credentials and years of appropriate experience, with the pro rata share being defined as the ratio of the number of credit hours taught divided by the standard instructional load for the institution as established by the President within State Board Policy. Division Chairs will receive the Chairperson stipend if and only if they also receive full compensation based upon the established salary schedule. Additionally, the requirements for the stipend included in the salary schedule must be fulfilled. (See page V-61 for procedures for applying for division chair.) Teaching Overloads. A full-time academic instructor may be employed to teach a maximum of one additional three credit hour course per term for pay, if approved by the President. A full-time technical instructor may be employed to teach a maximum of 15 additional contact hours per week for pay if approved by the President. The overload course must be taught outside the normal 35 hour work week of the instructor, and the pay must be at the prevailing part-time salary rate at the college. Overloads with pay will be approved only for instructors who teach at least the minimum full-time load (or equivalent as determined by the President). Proposed faculty overloads not in accordance with these standards must be approved by the Chancellor. (State Board Policy 608.03) Nursing Faculty Overload. Nursing faculty receive an appropriate overload contract calculated on contact hours when their contact hours exceed 24 hours per week. Nursing faculty receive an appropriate overload contract calculated on credit hours when more than 16 credit hours are generated in one term. Course Outlines, Syllabi and Examinations. It is the responsibility of each faculty member to provide students and the appropriate division chair with a course outline and/or syllabus for each course assigned. These shall be given to students at the first class meeting and to division chairs by the end of the first week of classes for each term. At the end of each term, a copy of the final examination for each course must be submitted to the division chair. Faculty Meetings. The Dean of Instruction sets the agenda and presides at each meeting. Each faculty member is required to attend. Faculty members with classes scheduled to meet during this time are to adjust the class assignments and activities to ensure their attendance at each semester faculty meeting. Faculty/Staff Meetings. College faculty/staff meetings are called on a regular schedule by the President. The President will be the presiding officer at each meeting with the Dean of Adult and Technical Education substituting in his absence. Free and open discussion is encouraged on all items of business. Attendance is mandatory for all full time Jefferson Davis Community College employees. College Standing Committees. Standing Committees advise the President with respect to the development and implementation of administrative policies and procedures and the accomplishment of instructional goals and objectives. Standing Committees provide formal communications between the faculty, support staff and the administration of the college. Faculty Ad Hoc Committees. The President, Dean of Instruction may appoint and convene ad hoc committees to address themselves to specific tasks or to participate in appointment procedures. Members of ad hoc committees are selected according to procedures put forth by the President. Extracurricular Activities. Faculty members are encouraged to participate in and to sponsor activities in which they have a particular interest. Persons planning to establish new organizations on campus shall use the procedure set forth in the College Catalog and Student Handbook.
