Casual Gallery Assistant Job Description Part time flexible hours @ £6.19 an hour Purpose of the Job The Gallery Assistants are responsible for assisting the Shop & Gallery Manager/Assistant Manager and other staff running the Craft Shop and Gallery. They will also work regularly with the Director, Curators and other members of the team. Main Responsibilities Customer Service Maintain the highest standards of customer and visitor service ensuring all visitors enjoy their visit to the Gallery and will recommend it to others Provide information to visitors about the exhibitions and education programme Listen and respond to various visitor comments and concerns and report these to the Craft Shop & Gallery Manager/Assistant Manager for evaluation or action Offer assistance to visitors who may require help Take bookings for events Manage the reception desk including answering and directing incoming phone calls Craft Shop Promote and manage the sale of shop stock and exhibits Handle cash and credit/debit card sales, cashing up and banking Assist in stock management including year end stock-take Invigilation Provide security for exhibitions including reporting any incident involving visitors touching or damaging art work Report problems, suspicious visitors and public safety hazards to the Craft Shop & Gallery Manager/Assistant Manager or a senior member of staff. Assist with the safety of staff and visitors in the Gallery and at off-site projects, including assisting visitors in emergency situations and fire drills. Secure and alarms the building when required. Other Assist with Gallery administration, e.g. compiling data on visitors and exhibitions, filing, photocopying, research and assisting with mail outs Occasional help with the installation of exhibitions Assist with the running of events at the Gallery including setting up equipment Undertake light cleaning duties in the shop, public areas and staff kitchen Other duties as assigned by the Craft Shop & Gallery Manager/Assistant Manager or the Director Person Specification Essential Retail and customer service experience Experience in dealing with the public Excellent communication skills A friendly communicative manner, flexible, willingness to accept responsibility, and ability to work on their own and as part of a team Experience of cash handling Availability to work casual hours including regular weekends and occasional evenings as and when required An enthusiasm for contemporary visual art and craft Good word processing and desktop computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Word 2007 email and internet.
