Meteorology Assignment 1 – Serve as a Teaching Assistant for a Weather and Climate Lab. You
will help students complete their lab assignments and be graded on your performance. Labs meet
Tuesday and Thursdays 300-450 in 207 Callaway. Lab syllabi are available on my website
www.westga.edu/~gdeweese. You must reserve a lab date with me; don’t just show up! 20 pts.
Meteorology Assignment 2 – Weather Maps. You will be provided with a selection of weather
maps and asked questions related to those maps. 20 pts. Due Wednesday, October 10th.
Meteorology Assignment 3 - Weather Journal. For 10 days, take notes on what you see and feel.
Humidity, winds, pressure, clouds, precipitation. What is your weather prediction? Compare this
to weatherunderground.com. How did you do? 20 pts. Due Monday, November 19th.
Meteorology Assignment 4 – What would the meteorology be like if the Earth rotated clockwise
instead of counter-clockwise? Discuss all continents weather patterns and ocean circulation. You
will be provided with a blank world map to use with your written discussion. 20 pts. Due by
Monday, December 3rd.
Meteorology Assignment 5 – Write up and discussion of The Day after Tomorrow. Watch the
movie and answer the following questions. Come to class ready to discuss the answers. 10 pts
write up and 10 pts discussion. Due Monday, December 3rd.
1. In the beginning of the movie, the heroes witness the breaking up on f ice cap. What’s
wrong with their depiction? Explain.
2. Why is the Dennis Quaid character so concerned about the disruption of thermohaline
circulation? Do you think this problem could be remedied by adding salt to the North
Atlantic?
3. Super hail is depicted in the movie. How would that form?
4. What were your thoughts on animal migration and behavior in the movie?
5. Are Arctic hurricanes possible? How would they form and who would they impact?
6. The movie has an interesting explanation on the formation of low pressure cells – what is
it? How accurate is their description?
7. Why did New York and Florida flood in the movie?
8. What role would the continental shelf play in this new world?
9. Why would the Southern Hemisphere be less impacted in this new world?
