4th Grade Rocks Study Guide Vocabulary Magma, lava, igneous rock, intrusive, extrusive, sediment, sedimentary rock, fossil, pressure, metamorphic rock, geologist, rock cycle Identify Rocks (by name) into categories of: Igneous, Sedimentary or metamorphic. Rock examples may include: Pumice, Granite, Sandstone, limestone, conglomerate, shale, gneiss, Marble, slate, quartzite Short Answer Be able to: 1. Explain how intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks are formed 2. How rocks can change from one type of rock to another (think about the rock cycle). 3. Identify on a rock cycle diagram conditions that must exist for one type of rock to change into another and/or types of rocks. 4. Explain why different rocks have different properties and list some of those properties (texture, hardness, crystal size, cleavage, luster, etc.) 5. Identify uses of different types of rocks. For example, how is limestone used? 6. Explain where fossils are most likely to be found. Why? 7. Identify which conditions must exist for metamorphic rocks to form. 8. Clearly define how Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic rocks are formed.
