Crustal Structure and Exhumation of UHPM Terranes
With the recommendation at the Task Group III-8 Committee Meeting at Waseda in last
August, we have decided to hold the 3rd UHPM workshop in Beijing on September 20 to
21, 2002. This UHP Workshop will be followed by a Penrose Conference entitled
“Precambrian HP/HT granulite-facies metamorphism: A key to understanding the lower
crust and reconstruction of Precambrian plate tectonics” at Peking University on
September 22 to 29 (including field trip). This workshop will highlight the results from
two major Chinese UHP programs: (1) The National Priority 973 Project on “Deep
Subduction of Continent” of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and (2) The
Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project in Donghai of the Sulu region. This
workshop will focus on 4 major themes:
1. Geophysical survey across UHPM terrane
2. Structure geology of UHPM terrane
3. Ultrahigh-Pressure metamorphism
4. Exhumation of UHP terranes
Other relevant UHP study will also be welcome to be included in this two-day workshop
which consists of both 20-minute oral and poster sessions. A field excursion (September
23-27) after the workshop + Penrose Conference will be arranged to visit the Chinese
Continental Scientific Drilling Site at Donghai, or Precambrian HP granulites in
Hengshan/Wutai region. This workshop will be organized by Prof. Cong Bolin and Prof.
Wang Qingchen of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Xu Zhiqin and Yang Jingsui of
Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, and Prof. Zheng Yongfei of University of
Science and Technology of China.
We are sure that lots of new data, especially about geophysical survey across the DabieSulu UHP best will be reported in the workshop. If you are interested in attending this

Details with regard to the preparation of your extended abstract (up to 6 printed pages)
and other information (travel, visa and accommodation, cost for logistics and field
excursion) will be sent to you in the 2nd circular in early-March. The detailed information

Right now, we can tell you the following important points:
(1) We are negotiating to publish the extended abstracts in a journal by Science
Press. The deadline for abstract submission is on July 30, 2002.
(2) We will charge $50 registration fee for all participants to cover the cost for
abstract volume and refreshment.
(3) In this year, the hotel costs for one person one night is about 260 RMB (about
30 US Dollars). The price will fluctuate accordingly.
(4) Accommodation of all Members of the Task Group III-8 will be paid by The
Organization Committee. Therefore, we need your early reply would be
appreciated as we need to submit our list of potential participants for our
application for funding.
