D ETAILED P ROBLEM D ESCRIPTION
I03 split the Application Manger ID into two sub-fields, an Application Type and Application Manager Tag. The Application
Type is meant to convey information about the type of application for which the gate is associated. Currently the specification allows the Policy Server to use this as part of its policy rule definition. However, the spec is silent on whether this can be used by the CMTS as part of the admission control process. Several different CMTS uses have been identified by various MSOs and
CMTS vendors. This EC clarifies that the CMTS may use this information as part of its admission control process.
P ROPOSED S PECIFICATION C HANGES (Please include section number, title, and paragraph)
Please note Engineering Changes may only address one technical issue in one specification, although it may require changes to multiple sections in the specification. Please itemize each change as follows. If you have multiple changes and some are technical and some are editorial (but all address the same issue), please indicate which is which in addition to selecting “both” under the type of change above. Note: Technical changes may require a vendor to change the design of the product. Editorial changes are points of clarification or clean-up but would not generally require a change to the product.

ORIGINAL SPEC TEXT:
Application Type is used by an Application Manager to identify the application that a gate is associated with. There is only one reserved value, zero, which indicates that there is "no defined application association". An Application Manager MAY pass a non-zero value to the Policy Server to indicate the particular application that a gate is associated with. The Policy
Server MAY use this value when applying policies to this gate. The Application Type values are configured by the service provider in the Application Managers and Policy Servers. These values are unique within the domain of the service provider, and have context only within this domain. Therefore a single Application Manager that is servicing multiple service providers may be configured with a different Application Type for each service provider, for the same application.
NEW SPEC TEXT:
Application Type is used by an Application Manager to identify the application that a gate is associated with. There is only one reserved value, zero, which indicates that there is "no defined application association". An Application Manager MAY pass a non-zero value to the Policy Server to indicate the particular application that a gate is associated with. The Policy
Server MAY use this value when applying policies to this gate. The CMTS MAY use this value when performing admission control for this gate. The Application Type values are configured by the service provider in the Application Managers and
Policy Servers. In order for the CMTS to utilize the Application Type in its admission control logic, the service provider would need to configure the CMTS with the allowed Application Types and their associated meaning.
These values are unique within the domain of the service provider, and have context only within this domain. Therefore a single Application Manager that is servicing multiple service providers may be configured with a different Application Type for each service provider, for the same application.
