Within the past decade the number of children identified with autism spectrum disorders has increased dramatically. Consequently, the need for teachers with expertise in this area has also increased significantly. The State of Florida has recently mandated that teachers serving students with autism hold an endorsement in that specific disability area. The endorsement requires twelve semester hours of coursework along with field-based experience involving students with autism. The University of Florida offers the four courses needed for the Florida Department of Education Autism endorsement. Course Offerings Summer 09 Semester Nature of Autism - 3 hours Intervention for Communication and Social Development - 3 hours Fall 09 Semester – Assessment and Diagnosis in Autism – 3 hours Behavior Management and Positive Behavioral Support – 3 hours Courses will also be offered in Spring 2009 and Summer 2010 Participants must have a bachelor’s or higher degree To add the endorsement you must have a Florida Educator certificate in any area of exceptional student education. .Courses are fully online.
