NONPF Webinar A Learner-Paced CE Activity “Pharmacogenomics and Clinical Practice: Ready for Prime Time?” Description: The science of pharmacogenomics has made significant progress in the past decade since the mapping of The Human Genome, and many of these biomarkers and genetic tests have now been included on FDA-approved drug labeling. This knowledge, although in its infancy may promote safe and effective use of certain targeted medications by more accurately predicting an individual’s drug response and tolerance to therapy. The current literature addresses drug therapy for select therapeutic areas (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tamoxifen co-therapy, warfarin genotype testing, clopidogrel and PPIs co-therapy as examples) that highlight the applicability of pharmacogenomics, especially in older adults. Brief literature review will be presented regarding some emerging hot therapeutic areas. Ethical, social, legal, and economic challenges of translating pharmacogenomics into clinical practice will be discussed. What should the clinician/prescriber know about this emerging science and its implications for medicine? This Webinar is for NP educators who wish to maintain currency on pharmacogenetics for their teaching and clinical practice responsibilities. At the end of the session, the participants will be able to: 1. Define the science of pharmacogenomics and briefly review the lessons from The Human Genome Project. 2. Identify the potential of pharmacogenomics in therapeutic clinical applications and decision making for medication management in older adults. 3. Describe the variability in the genetic polymorphisms for CYP450 liver enzymes using some specific case examples (warfarin testing, SSRIs and tamoxifen cotherapy, clopidogrel and PPIs cotherapy). 4. Enumerate the challenges (ethical, social, legal, and economic) facing the wide application of pharmacogenomic testing in older adults. Speaker The invited speaker for the Webinar is Manju T. Beier, PharmD, CGP, FASCP. Dr. Beier is the Chief Scientific Officer for Natural Molecular Testing Corp and is also Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Beier presented a preconference session on pharmacogenetics at the NONPF 2010 Annual Meeting and is returning by popular demand. System Requirements Participants will need both a phone line and separate Internet connection, and a Java-enabled Internet browser.
