(4) Fract dec Dominoes The Robert Smyth School Mathematics Faculty Innovation & excellence Decimal and Fractions Dominoes Te a c h e r S h e e t Calculators are not allowed for this activity! 1. Teacher first shows students how to convert fractions to decimals using long division 2. Students perform a couple of calculations to check they can do them 3. Working in pairs, students cut out a set of “dominoes” They then match the dominoes and try to make a complete chain. When the chain is complete the pieces at either end of the chain should match too. If they don’t they’ve made a mistake. 4. Students write 5 examples of matched fractions and decimals into their exercise book 5. Using the fraction part of the domino and working in pairs, students arrange the fractions into order of size. 6. Once checked by the teacher, students copy their list from 5 into their exercise books (4) Fract dec Dominoes The Robert Smyth School Mathematics Faculty Innovation & excellence . 1 0.1 2 3 0.286 4 . 1 0.16 4 . 7 0.45 8 5 0.125 11 1 9 3 5 4 9 1 8 2 7 . 1 0.1 2 3 0.286 4 . 1 0.16 4 . 7 0.45 8 5 0.125 11 1 9 3 5 4 9 1 8 2 7 . 0.4 0.875 . 0.3 0.4 0.375 . 0.4 0.875 . 0.3 0.4 0.375 1 6 2 3 3 8 1 3 2 5 1 6 2 3 3 8 1 3 2 5 . 0.6 0.75 0.6 0.25 0.5 . 0.6 0.75 0.6 0.25 0.5
