Year 3 / 4 French – World Cup New Curriculum Unit Objective Lesson 6: jouons à un jeu! Children use knowledge of lessons 1 to 5 to create their own games and play them. They extend themselves by writing instructions for the games in French Success criteria Most pupils will show knowledge of topic specific vocabulary learnt in lessons 1 to 5. Many pupils will remember the core structures used so far, some with support. Some pupils will extend themselves in writing. Vocabulary: all vocabulary from lessons 1 to 5, plus any extended vocabulary needed (dictionary) New Curriculum objectives Activities Resources / Differentiation Activities will be done in ‘country’ groups. The teacher acts as a supervisor, helper but also has time to assess the work of each group and the contribution of individuals. The task of creating a game will assess understanding of new knowledge, how pupils are able to re-use material independently for the activity as well as the ability to extend themselves in the rule writing. Groups could be working in parallel on creating both games (beetle and dominoes/pairs) write phrases from memory and adapt these to create new sentences understand basic grammar: instructional language 1. Le footballeur qui rit! Based on French traditional game called Le Cochon qui rit (Beetle game). Rules: A footballer has to be dressed with the correct items according to the throw of a dice. 1. Rules: you can’t put on a sock unless you have the shin pad on! You can’t put on a shoe unless you have the shin pad and the sock on. They write their rules in draft then in neat. Now the children can test their game by playing it. Each game and pieces can be laminated and stored in a plastic pocket. Brainstorm the pupils about possible language on dominoes Guide the children towards various possible combinations for the dominoes. Dominoes can be picture/word, or French word/English word, or French sentence/English sentence. (word or sentence level) You might want to group the pupils by ability group, asking more able pupils to work on sentences, with no pictures. Use two colours of font or pen to differentiate English and French. Part 1: each group, having chosen its type of dominoes, discusses content. Use of dictionary Working on computer or on paper. Each group is given blank domino template and a dictionary to extend their knowledge. Each group is taught how to edit their work. Part 2: pupils create their dominoes. Sheets are laminated, Vocabulary support sheet (from one lesson or all lessons) dominoes are cut. Make sure picture and equivalent word do not appear on the same domino! Part 3: pupils play!
