Letter from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
We are delighted to welcome you and your child to Meadow View JMI School.
This prospectus will give you lots of information about the school, but we also
extend a welcome to you to come and have a look for yourselves.
We recognise that this is a very exciting time for both you and your child and

like to keep it available for additions at a later date.
We endeavour to ensure that your child’s education will be a fulfilling
partnership between home and school and we operate an ‘open door’ policy to

A prospectus can only provide you with basic information, so, if you would like to
know more about us, please contact the school, and my staff and we will do our
best to help you.
Our OFSTED report is also available at:
www.ofsted.gov.uk/inspect/index.htm
With best wishes from Governors, Staff and Headteacher.

telephone should contact the school office to obtain permission and sign a
disclaimer. Pupils are not allowed to use phones at school, and, as with other
valuables, the school takes no responsibility.
Hairy Facts
Families are asked to check their children’s hair regularly for head lice and to
treat the condition before it spreads to other children. The clinic or the doctor
will give you a prescription and treatment is free for children. The school nurse
or the clinic, not the school, will give you the best advice on how to treat head
lice. Walsall Public Health Department is responsible for providing information
and help.

The School Curriculum.
The governing body of Meadow View JMI has approved Walsall Authority`s
Curriculum policy statement and the Headteacher will ensure that the school
curriculum is compatible with this policy.
The school is operating within the revised National Curriculum framework
covering, English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Geography, History, Music,
Information Technology, Physical Education, Design Technology, Religious
Studies, Social and Personal Education (including Sex Education).
You may request to withdraw your children from Sex Education, Religious
Education and School assemblies.
At Nursery and Reception age there is an emphasis on development of skills in
reading and numeracy and through their work the children develop a sense of
independence.
The curriculum is delivered through team teaching methods. This can enable
children to benefit from specific teacher skills and receive work which is
geared to their individual needs.
Provision is made for children with special
needs including the gifted child.
There is a wide range of resources available in the school to help in the delivery
of the curriculum. These include :

Interactive whiteboards

A variety of schemes and textbooks

Calculators

A graded reading system

A school library

A computer suite with 15 work stations

Modern colour computers in teaching bases

Practical science equipment

Art materials

Musical instruments

A fully equipped gymnasium

Internet access
Health Education is part of the Science curriculum for all children and Sex
Education is part of this programme in Year 5. A parents meeting is always held
to discuss the materials used.
Children may receive instrumental tuition from the Authority’s peripatetic music
staff in playing violin, brass and woodwind instruments. Swimming is taught at a
learner pool and at a local secondary school.
Literacy at Meadow View
At Meadow View, the children are taught early reading and writing skills using a
successful literacy programme called Read Write Inc. The programme has five
key underlying principles:

Participation and partner work, Positive teaching, Pace, Purpose, Passion ,
energy and enthusiasm.
At the core of Read Write Inc. is the vigorous teaching of synthetic phonics.
Children learn 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound-blend
words, alongside letter formation and spelling.
The teaching of phonics will begin in the Nursery with the children taking part
in lots of practical and oral activities encouraging them to hear and discriminate
between sounds. They will then be taught some early elements of the Read
Write Inc. programme at a pace appropriate to the children’s development.
In the Reception class the teaching will focus on letter recognition, formation
and the ability to sound-blend short words. On entry to Reception the
children’s progress will be assessed so that they can be grouped with children
of a similar ability. This is a key feature of the programme, with homogenous
grouping of children leading to the best rates of progress. Children’s progress
is tracked regularly and groups are flexible.
The children move through the Read Write Inc. programme as their reading
ability develops. In school, they read books with words they can sound-blend so
they get early success in reading. Children enjoy reading the amusing texts and
evelop their comprehension skills by discussing the questions at the end of each
story. Copies of these books are sent home for the children to read and enjoy
with carers, thereby consolidating the work taking place in school.
Children making good progress will complete the Read Write Inc. programme in
Key Stage 1. They will then move onto further develop their text analysis and
writing skills using the Read Write Inc. Comprehension programme. They will
also be taught units from the primary Framework for literacy in preparation for
the end of Key Stage 1 SAT tests.
Other children require a greater level of repetition and reinforcement of
reading and writing skills and will move through the Read Write Inc. phonics
programme at a pace appropriate to their development. The programme is also
suitable for children in Lower Key Stage 2 who are not yet fluent readers.
Read Write Inc. Fresh Start is an intervention programme available for any
children in Upper Key Stage 2 who are reading below national Curriculum Level 3
and need to work in a small structured group to develop their reading and
writing skills.
At Meadow View our aim is for all our pupils to become fluent, confident and
enthusiastic readers who read for pleasure and to broaden their experiences.
Each child’s progress is important to us and is carefully monitored in order to
help us achieve this aim.
The School Council
Members of the School Council are elected by other pupils annually. The Council
plays a major role in decision making in school.
Educational Visits
The children's education is often enhanced by an educational visit. Some visits
cost nothing at all because they are within walking distance. Others cost only
the price of the transport, but others are more expensive since they involve
paying entrance fees.
We rely on voluntary parental contributions towards the cost of the visit and
regret that if not enough parents agree to a basic price, the visit cannot take
place.
Parents are always asked to sign consent forms before children are taken out of
school, and we ask for a prompt response, otherwise forms get lost and the visit
may be cancelled, due to lack of response.
Charging Policy
Governors have adopted a charging policy to cover voluntary contributions to
visits, certain craft items and damage to or loss of school property.
Procedure for Complaints
Despite all our care and attention to detail there may be worries or complaints.
If you have a complaint, please contact the school, either in person or by
telephone. You may initially like to discuss the matter with the class teacher.
where the problem will probably be quickly resolved.
The Headteacher and the Deputy Headteacher are also available to listen to and
deal with complaints about any aspect of your child's school life. If a problem is
not resolved to your satisfaction, the next step is to inform the Governing Body,
details of whom are at the front of this prospectus, they may be contacted
through the school.
In the unusual case of a problem still not being resolved, you are advised to
contact Walsall Education.
Parents as Partners in Education
‘Meadow View News’ will keep you informed of school activities and is issued
regularly.
Parents are encouraged to become involved in the life of the school through a
variety of activities including hearing children read, helping with art work,
providing transport for fixtures and accompanying educational visits.
Parents are invited to come into the school for assemblies and special events at
Christmas, School Productions, Book Fairs and Sports Day. Also for Inspire
Weeks when parents come into school and work alongside their child(ren).
Parents are most welcome to come into school to see teachers and the best time
is at the end of the school day. Formal opportunities are provided three times a
year for parents to discuss their child’s progress with the teaching staff. A
formal written report is issued towards the end of the school year.
There is a flourishing Parents Association which organises social and fund
raising events.
We offer extra child care for before and after school. Also wrap around
provision in the Treehouse. This facility is run by Pheasey Park farm on the
Meadow View site.
Leading Parent Partnership
The school has strong relationships with parents. This work with parents was
recognised in July 2007 when the school was awarded a ‘Leading Parent
Partnership Award’. There are many opportunities for parents and children to
work together, such as in workshops, story book weaver project and Inspire
Weeks. Parents’ views are sought and acted upon and they are kept informed of
what is happening through monthly newsletters.
If you would like to join the Parent Association please complete the form below
and return to the school.

Plays, Productions and Extra Curricular Activities
Children from our school have engaged in many activities over the last few
years, including Comic Relief and collecting enough Tesco tokens to obtain
televisions, CD players, a camera, printers and additional software. We enter
many competitions, including painting competitions and sporting activities.
Book Fayres are also a regular feature of our school life, so that children and
parents can have easy access to new and attractive books to encourage the love
of books and the important development of reading skills.
Throughout the year families are invited to a variety performances and events.
Health and Safety
We try to make our school a healthy and safe environment for both children and
adults.
We ask parents to complete and return 'contact number' forms in September
so that a parent or identified adult can be contacted immediately should a pupil
become ill in school. Particular care should be taken to inform school of any
change of particulars as children can become distressed if contact cannot be
made.
Equal Opportunities
At Meadow View JMI School, every child has equal access to the curriculum and
the equipment. All resources show an equal balance of society and all curriculum
areas will be appropriate to the differing needs of all children. Matters of
discipline will be dealt with fairly. Adults will have equal opportunity to access
and information. All parents will be given the same information on general
matters and particular information about their own children. No child or adult
will knowingly be discriminated against on the grounds of gender, race, religion,
physical disability or social background.
Special Needs and Inclusion
Those children identified as needing additional help are given targets
appropriate to their needs. These targets are reviewed termly and if necessary,
assistance is sought from external agencies.
A small number of pupils are covered by a Statement of Special Education
Needs which are obtained after following procedures laid down in the “Special
Needs Code of Practice.”
The school embraces inclusion and seeks to overcome any perceived barriers to
learning.
School Rules
In order to maintain a safe and happy environment there are a few school rules
which are based upon the aims of the school.
The school has a Behaviour and Anti-bullying policy. Children are reminded
about behaviour and politeness by their teachers. Parents are contacted about
serious incidents.
Homework
Our Homework policy encourages children to read, practice tables and spellings
at home and to complete English and Mathematic work where appropriate.
The School and the Community
The school uses links with the local community to enhance History and
geography work. Educational visits are made to local shops, library, Beacon
Church, Doe Bank Park and Barr Beacon. Curriculum visits take place throughout
the year and parents will always be informed by letter.
Parents are usually asked to make a voluntary contribution to cover the cost of
educational visits.
School Fund
At Meadow View we suggest a voluntary contribution to school funds of £7.50
per family per school year or £2.50 per term. This money helps to subsidise
educational visits and special events and benefits all of the children.
School Meals
Healthy school meals are available and money should be brought to school on a
Monday of each week. Money should be in an envelope clearly marked with your
child’s name, class and what the money is for. Alternatively, your child may
bring a sensible sandwich meal to eat in the dining room. We are a school who
promote ‘Healthy Eating’.
All children are cared for at lunch time by supervisory assistants.
Do I qualify for free school meals?
You will qualify for free school meals if you or your partner are receiving:






Income Support
Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
Employment and Support Allowance (Income Related)
Child Tax Credit provided you do not also receive Working Tax Credit
and have an annual income, as assessed by the Inland Revenue, that does
not exceed £16,190
Guarantee Credit element of State Pension Credit
Support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
We would like to ask you to consider registering your child/children as eligible
for free school meals, whether or not you intend to take up the option of them
actually having a free school meal. This is because a great deal of the funding
that comes from the Government for schools in Walsall is based on the numbers
of pupils eligible for free school meals. So by registering for free school meals
you will be helping the funding of your child’s school.
Application Forms are available from the school office.
Supplementary Education
There is a wide range of activities at the end of the school day for older
children including football, cross country, netball, athletics (field and track
events), softball cricket and craft activities. Parents permission is always
require for these activities and a consent form must be completed.
There is a small charge for these activities.
Wrap Around Facility
We have the Tree House on site which is a facility run by Pheasey Park Farm
Children’s Centre offering before and after school care. Another type of care
is the wrap around that enables children to be cared for during the morning and
attend Nursery in the afternoon. The Children’s centre is registered with
OFSTED and registration certificates are available for inspection.
The Role of Parents in the Education Of Their Child.
Your support in the education of your children is vital to their academic
progress. All children are encouraged to take home their reading books or
library books. Library books help to enhance their reading skills, vocabulary and
enjoyment of reading. They may bring home other work from time to time and
your interest is always an encouragement to your children. Your views on
homework are always welcome.
We endeavour to maintain high standards of discipline in school so that school is
a safe place for all children. Please support us at home by encouraging children
to make good use of their time in school so that it is primarily a place for
learning.
Although we have termly parent\teacher consultation evenings, staff are willing
to talk to parents at other times. However, please make an appointment so that
the meeting can be at a mutually convenient time. It is essential that the school
and the family work together in order that your children may have the best
possible education.
From time to time we send out questionnaires. This is your opportunity to have
your say. Please take the time to complete and return them to school. Your
views are always taken into consideration.
Attendance
Attendance for the school year September 2009 to July 2010 was 95.3%
Background of the School
Meadow View JMI School was formed by the amalgamation of Doe
Bank JMI School and Collingwood Primary School. The purpose
built, single storey building on the Doe Bank site houses the school
which has provided the community with a two form entry school
committed to providing the best opportunities possible for all its
pupils.
Refurbishment of the building was completed in November 1993.
The new school was formally opened by Bruce George MP, on 8th
July 1994.
The refurbishment programme included carpets and wet areas in
all year bases.
Each pair of classrooms was refurbished to
facilitate team teaching provision.
An Early Years Unit was
created to accommodate provision for all children at Nursery and
Reception age. Each year base has its own suitably sized boys and
girls toilets, and the whole school was redecorated.
A new
entrance has been built with approaching ramp and connecting
corridor.
With the disabled in mind wheelchair access and
disabled toilet provision were created.
The school is ideally situated with extensive playing fields for
sport and environmental studies use. The site adjoins greenbelt
and woodland and has ease of access from Birmingham, Walsall,
Sutton Coldfield and Streetly.
Meadow View JMI School is a co-educational primary day school in
the administrative area of Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council.
The school provides high standards of education, enabling all
children to reach their maximum potential and prepared children
to be happy, independent and responsible members of a changing
society.

Policy on Care and Control of Pupils
If staff become aware of, or have a need to become involved in, situations where a
child may be at risk of hurting themselves or others, or if the behaviour of a child
seriously disrupts good order in the school or causes damage to property, staff may
need to take steps to intervene physically. In such circumstances staff will follow the
school’s policy for dealing with such situations. Any parent who wishes to view this
policy may do so on request.
