Information for Applicants Required for September 2014 Teacher of English With responsibility for KS3 TLR £2689 Qualifications The Governors are seeking to appoint a highly motivated, innovative and talented teacher of English Language and English Literature to teach across the Key Stages. Recent experience of teaching English Literature at Advanced Level is essential and a secure working knowledge of the Cambridge iGCSE qualification would also be highly beneficial but not essential. The successful applicant will have responsibility for KS3 English and lead on this important area of the curriculum. Each teaching room is well equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard, a teacher PC and four fixed PCs for students’ use. In addition to this, the department has access to two Laptop trolleys and the school’s own booking system for ICT rooms. The English Curriculum area boasts an extensive library of teaching resources, including texts, interactive software and DVDs for use in lessons and a dedicated work room for members of the Curriculum Area. The Curriculum Key Stage 3 All students have nine lessons of English per two-week cycle at The King’s School. Students are currently taught in mixed ability form groups of approximately 25 students and follow a six unit course each year, designed by members of the English team to stretch, challenge and enthuse. Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening Skills are developed and assessed through a variety of core learning units that include: Media, Prose, Poetry, Drama, Shakespeare, Non-Fiction and Creative Writing. Key Stage 4 Students currently follow the Edexcel GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature courses and are taught in ability sets of between 12-31 students. We have also recently introduced the Cambridge iGCSE. Attainment in English is excellent at The King’s School: in 2013 85% of our students achieved A*-C in English Language and 94% of students achieved A*- C in English Literature. English Information September 2014 | Page 1 of 2 Key Stage 5 Students can choose to study: AQA English Literature Spec B Edexcel English Language and Literature English is a very popular and successful subject at KS5. In 2013 58% of students achieved A*-B in English Literature at A level and 75% of students achieved A*-B in A Level English Language and Literature. Enrichment Activities The English Curriculum Area encourages a wide variety of enrichment activities. In addition to National writing, spelling and reading competitions, the Curriculum Area has invited visiting speakers and performers to enhance the learning experience of all our students. Students are also provided with numerous opportunities to visit the theatre. Additionally, the Curriculum Area has an excellent team of dedicated English prefects who support and promote a passion for ‘English’ in numerous ways.
