Ida May Houghton died in her 30's about a week after Galen was born, with mumps.
After the death of Ida May, Charles Houghton married a mean woman by the name of
Mrs. Norgate. Jean called her the evil witch. She was a very cruel person who used
to beat up the Houghton children, especially Gwen. One day Gwen's dog came to
her rescue and jumped through the screen door and went after Mrs. Norgate. She
poisoned the dog and two days later it was dead. Another time Gwen was forced to
run away from home and spent two days in one of local graneries with nothing to eat
but wheat.
