R-474 Page 2 Whereas, many distinctive breeds of cattle were brought to New England from Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, and Whereas, in the late 19th century, as larger commercial farm operations replaced subsistence farms, the historic cattle breeds were crossed with more popular dairy breeds and lost their unique identity, and Whereas, an unusual exception to this pattern of the small specialty breeds’ integration into the larger breeds was the Randall Lineback breed which the Randall family in Sunderland protected for 80 years as a closed breed, and Whereas, Samuel Randall and his son Everett, who served in the House of Representatives as the member from Sunderland in the 1935-1936 Biennium, were superb guardians of their cattle and maintained them in top condition, and Whereas, Randall Lineback cattle are medium in size and are multipurpose livestock which have been used as oxen and for dairy and beef products, and Whereas, Randall Lineback’s future appeared in jeopardy when Everett Randall died in 1985 and his farming operation was closed, and Whereas, fortunately, when the cattle were dispersed, small groups of the breed were sold to individuals determined to see the Randall Livestock breed continue its distinctive existence into the 21st century, and Whereas, although the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy still lists the Randalls as a critically rare breed, they have experienced a renaissance under supportive breeders and have rebounded from near extinction to www.leg.state.vt.us NO. R-474 Page 3 approximately 150 cattle located at farms and zoos in New England, including Vermont, and in Virginia and Kansas, and Whereas, in order to promote the continuing vitality of the breed, the Randall Lineback Breed Association was organized in 2005, and its membership includes Samuel Randall’s grandson George Randall who is committed to the breed, and Whereas, in celebration of the Randall Lineback’s remarkable resurgence, and as a way to acknowledge the breed’s unique place in Vermont’s agricultural history, the General Assembly has passed H.468, “An Act Relating to the Designation of Randall Lineback Cattle as a State Heritage Breed of Livestock,” now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives: That the General Assembly congratulates the breeders of the Randall Lineback cattle breed on its designation as a state heritage livestock breed, and be it further Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to David Randall, to George Randall, and to the Randall Lineback Breed Association. www.leg.state.vt.us
