SUTTER COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT JOB DESCRIPTION Volunteer Firefighter Trainee DEFINITION: Consistent with the mission and values of the Sutter County Fire Department, under supervision, a Firefighter responds to rescue calls; administers emergency medical care; performs firefighting duties including combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and does other related work as required. DUTIES AND AUTHORITIES: A. All duties/authorities will be accomplished under supervision. B. Under supervision of departmental chain of command. 1. Participate in training 2. Retrieve equipment from apparatus. 3. Follow reasonable orders. 4. Work as part of a team. 5. Follow chain of command. 6. Use Department equipment properly and safely. 7. Clean and care for apparatus, equipment and station 8. Obtain and maintain First Responder and CPR certificates. 9. Provide emergency medical services. 10. Fire suppression duties. 11. Direct traffic/maintain scene security/ safety 12. Under special circumstances, may become driver/operator of specific vehicles. 13. Haz-Mat awareness. 14. Participates in fire prevention/public education activities, etc. 15. Write goals/objectives/personal developement needs for next performance appraisal. 14. Maintain physical fitness to the level required by this position description’s duties, authorizations and accountabilities. C. In absence of any other supervisor, carries out all vital duties. Under extreme circumstances, Volunteer Firefighter Trainee is expected to perform (consistent with their knowledge/skills/abilities) all duties that anyone else with same knowledge/ skills/abilities would perform: i.e.., perform consistently with their knowledge/skills/ abilities. 1. Don/use protective equipment properly. 2. Use radio-telephone equipment 3. Respond to incidents in a timely manner. ACCOUNTABILITIES: A. Autonomously: 1. Participate in 70% or more of scheduled trainings. 2. Use appropriate protective equipment according to Department policy. 3. Retrieve requested equipment from apparatus promptly. 4. Understand, accomplish orders and report back as necessary. 5. Work cooperatively with other emergency personnel. 6. Follow chain of command. 7. Use radio/telephone equipment as per Department policy. 8. Proper operation of equipment. 9. Help clean and maintain quarters. equipment and apparatus. 10. Obtain and maintain First Responder and CPR certificates. 11. Deliver First Responder and CPR per State and local laws. 12. Respond to the station for all incidents in a safe and timely manner. 13. Recognize Haz Mat situations and take proper action in accordance with S.O.P. B. Under supervision: 1. Operate apparatus in accordance with State law and County and SCFD policies. 2. Carry out fire suppression (and fire prevention/ Public education) duties as directed. 3. Direct traffic, maintain scene security/safety as directed. C. Don/use protective equipment according to Department standards. 2. Properly remove equipment from apparatus or storage. 3. Operates various types of equipment (chain saw, power equipment). 4. Use flares – lay proper pattern. 5. Emergency medical skills. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS) A. Entry requirements for Volunteer Firefighter personnel: 1. Valid California Driver’s License. 2. Completed County application process. 3. Minimum age: 18 years for firefighter. APPLICATION PROCESS: 1. Properly completed application will be reviewed by a board consisting of departmental personnel. 2. An oral interview will then be scheduled and conducted by the review board. 3. If the applicant successfully passes the oral interview, he/she will be asked to take a copy of his/her application to the Sutter County Personnel Office. At that time, the County Personnel Department will be responsible for conducting a DMV background check and an appointment for a physical examination will be made. The County Personnel Department will contact the Station Captain to advise of the clearance/non-clearance status of the ap plicant. The Applicant will be contacted and advised of hi s/her status by the designated officer. 4. A Volunteer Firefighter Trainee will become a Volunteer Firefighter upon successful/proper demonstration of Volunteer Firefighter knowledge/ skills/abilities. PROBATIONARY PERIOD: A. A Volunteer Firefighter Trainee is subject to a one (1) year probationary period. B. Under supervision 1. Operate assigned apparatus. 2. Proper use of extinguishing agents. ABILITIES: 1. Understand written and verbal communication On a variety of technical subjects. 2. Work as a team. 3. Physical ability to handle equipment. 4. Ability to follow orders as given. 5. Form and maintain positive working relationships. 6. Use of chain of command. 7. Proper use of radio-telephone equipment according to Department policy. 8. Handle the public authoritatively.
