IMPERIAL COUNTY Class Title: FIREFIGHTER II BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned Fire Captain, perform responsible duties in the suppression of fires; perform fire engineer and driver/operator duties as assigned; maintain fire department equipment, apparatus and facilities; provide emergency medical care for sick and injured individuals. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Firefighter II is the advanced-level classification in the series. Incumbents perform technical equipment operation and provide training, guidance and work direction to assigned personnel. Firefighter I Incumbents perform routine fire suppression and firehouse maintenance duties at an assigned facility. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Respond to fire alarms and extinguish fires including structural, automotive, aircraft and petroleum fires; apply appropriate suppression agent. Monitor burning structures, the operation of the fire truck and other firefighting personnel as assigned and according to established procedures. Drive fire apparatus to emergency scenes; place and operate equipment as directed by supervisory staff; operate engines and lay hose; calculate and monitor hydraulic conditions. Direct and participate in engine hook-up; set and adjust controls to assure proper and effective water flow; set up ladders and water monitors. Perform routine maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus, quarters and grounds; perform operational checks of machinery, vehicles and equipment; report malfunctions according to established procedures. Provide emergency medical treatment for sick and injured individuals as needed; rescue and evacuate persons in dangerous or life-treating situations including earthquakes and floods. Respond to airport calls and dispatch other personnel to emergencies such as law enforcement, ambulance or Imperial Irrigation District personnel; notify hospital of incoming patients in accordance to established procedures. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to fire suppression inspection activities, hose testing, medical treatment and testing. Participate in fire drills and attend classes in advanced firefighting techniques and emergency medical treatment procedures. October 1992 Firefighter II - Continued Page 2 Train and provide work direction to a firefighting crew including hourly, volunteer and other personnel as assigned; perform lead duties at a satellite station. Maintain fire station by wet mopping and waxing floors, changing lights, cutting grass, painting and dusting as assigned. Maintain fire trucks by checking water, oil, belts, tires, batteries, pumps, engine drive train, water hose equipment and radios; wash, wax and detail engines and equipment. Respond to emergency scuba dive calls as qualified and required. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Technical operation, use and maintenance of specialized fire apparatus, vehicles and equipment. Pump and hydraulic operations. Methods, materials and equipment used in fire suppression. Principles and practices of fire science. Rescue and evacuation techniques. California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CAL-OSHA) fire requirements and regulations. Proper tool and equipment usage and maintenance of firefighter equipment. Principles of training and providing work direction. Firefighting procedures such as hose and ladder practices, forcible entry, ventilation, salvage and overhaul procedures. Record-keeping techniques. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. First aid and cardiopulmonary and resuscitation techniques. ABILITY TO: Drive fire apparatus to emergency scenes. Set up and operate pumps, hoses and related hydraulic equipment at fire scenes. Train and provide work direction to others. Respond to fire alarms and extinguish structural, automotive, aircraft and other fires. Triage victims and provide appropriate medical treatment in emergency situations. Utilize appropriate fire suppression agents and techniques. Properly supply water to attack lines at fire scene. Read, interpret, apply and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Lift objects weighing up to 200 pounds. Maintain records and prepare reports. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Perform prolonged and strenuous work in adverse conditions. Perform heavy physical labor. October 1992 Firefighter II - Continued Page 3 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: one year of experience at the level of a Firefighter I. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver’s license. Incumbents must obtain a California Class B driver’s license and an Advanced First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate from an authorized agency within two months of employment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work includes indoor and outdoor environment; subject to shift work, evening or variable hours, emergency call-out, and driving emergency vehicles to conduct work. Position requires heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds), climbing, standing for extended periods of time, physical agility and stamina, heavy physical labor, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate firefighting equipment, and bending at the waist. Incumbents may be exposed to extreme heat, toxic smoke and gases, noise, chemicals, hazardous materials, contact with blood and body fluids, driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions.
