Required Text: Mathematics, An Applied Approach, 8th edition. Sullivan and Mizrahi.
Required Materials: You must have a scientific calculator for this course. However, the emphasis of this
course will be applications of Business Math, rather than the calculator and its capabilities.
The TI-83 and any other graphing calculator will NOT be allowed during quizzes/exams.
More importantly, cell phones will not be allowed as substitute calculators.
Course Topics: Math 120 is designed to teach students the fundamentals of mathematical concepts used in
business. Topics include linear systems, matrix algebra, mathematics of finance, functions
and their graphs, logarithmic and exponential functions, calculus including differentiation and
integration, and optimization.

Quizzes: There will be a series of quizzes given throughout the semester. The quizzes will be based on the
concepts taught in lecture and the assigned homework problems. The quizzes are designed to help you better
prepare for the exams, so you should take them seriously. NO MAKE UP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN.
Exams: Exam 1 will be given the week of October 3, Exam 2 will be given the week of November 7th, and
Exam 3 will be given the week of December 5th. The final exam will be administered on Saturday, December
17th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. NO MAKE UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN.
Homework: Homework will be assigned, but not graded. It is absolutely essential that you do the homework
so that you are better prepared for quizzes and exams. Because it is not collected, you will have to discipline
yourself to stay on track. The answers to all odd-numbered homework problems are in the back of the textbook.
Tutoring: There is free tutoring available to all Math 120 students. There will be tutors available to you
Monday through Friday in GMCS 409. A complete schedule will be posted on my website and on blackboard.
In addition to the tutoring in Room GMCS 409, you should take advantage of my office hours. I am there to
help you and answer any questions you may have about the course. If you cannot attend office hours because of
scheduling conflicts, we can set up an appointment at a time that is mutually convenient.
Some Basics: Turn off your cellphones before coming to class—not on vibrate mode, but OFF. Do not talk
while I am lecturing or while other students are asking questions. Do not come to class late, and do not leave
early. It is not only inconsiderate, but also quite disruptive to other students. If it is a consistent problem, the
matter will be addressed on a one-to-one basis.
