PEDIGREE BREEDING CATTLE AND COMMERCIAL COWS AND CALVES – 430
Top quality Blues and Blondes draw the crowds to Newark
High class entries of both British Blue and British Blonde breeding cattle drew a capacity
crowd to Newark on Saturday (31 May) for the dispersal of the Gregmaur herd of British
Blues and the Marstonmill herd of British Blondes on behalf of Gregory and Archer families,
respectively.
Commenting after the sale auctioneer Paul Gentry said it had been a credit to both vendors
that the ringside was packed with bidders from across the UK. "Without a doubt both these
herds offered buyers the chance to access high class breeding females in their respective
breeds the like of which only ever become available at dispersal sales."
Gregmaur dispersal
The dispersal of the Gregmaur herd of British Blues for the Gregory family saw a top call of
4600gns when David and Jane Coulson, Middle Rasen, bought Gregmaur Ember, a 2009born second calver by Hazelwood Freshman. This one is out of Gregmaur Amanda, a Gib
Ven Het Negenbond daughter and sold with a Bringlee Waldo heifer calf at foot.
Second best of the sale was 4400gns paid for the Colos Van Daisel daughter Gregmaur
Francesca. She is out of Gregmaur Urana, an Affute Du Ry Ossogne daughter and sold with a
heifer calf at foot, Gremaur Jazzie, a Kramiet Et Ten Durme daughter. Buying this one was
Victoria Bowring, Mansfield.
Following that were a brace of 3800gns calls, with the first of these made for Gregmaur
Daniella, another by Freshman and this time out of the Gitan Du P'Tit Mayeur daughter
Gregamaur Anna. She sold to Messrs A & I MacInness, Argyll with a heifer calf at foot by
Kubitus De Bray.
The second at this money was Gregmaur Helena, a 2012-born heifer by Gitan Du P'Tit
Mayeur and out of Gregmaur Petra, a Freshman daughter. She was knocked down to Adam
Neachell, Staffordshire.
Then at 3400gns was another heifer, Gregmaur Iona. This 2013-born Colos Van Daisel
daughter is out of Gregmaur Amanda, dam of the top priced lot and sold to S H Butler,
Thatcham, Berkshire.
And just shy of that at 3300gns was Gregmaur Fiona, a Gitan Du P'Tit Mayeur daughter out
of Gregmaur Unity, another Freshman daughter. She was bought by J and G Sharp, Essex.
Following her at 3200gns was Gregmaur Georgina, a 2011-born Raciste Du Pachis A La
Motte daughter out of Gregmaur Nula, another Freshman daughter. Sold with a bull calf at
foot by Kubitus De Bray this one heads to Staffordshire with Adam Neachell.
Marstonmill dispersal
Trade for the Mastronmill British Blonde dispersal of Ian and Sue Archer peaked at 2200gns
for Marstonmill Diamond, a 2008-born cow by Marstonmill Alonso and out of Marstonmill
Bessie, an Urubu daughter. She sold with a heifer calf at foot by Marstonmill Elton and was
bought by M Conneally, Kenilworth, Warwickhsire.
Taking the next best call here was 2100gns for Marstonmill Barbie-Doll, an Urubu daughter
out of the multi award winning show cow Marstonmill Penelope Pitstop, a Kinaston Noah
daughter. This one also sold with a Marstonmill Elton heifer calf at foot and was the choice
of Messrs Rawding, Tring, Hertfordshire.
At the same money was Marstonmill Clarinda. Again by Urubu she is out of Marstonmill
Amanda, a Marstonmill Sampson daughter and sold in-calf to Elton. Buying this one was A
Northern, Oakham, Rutland.
A trio then collected bids of 2000gns, with the first being Marstonmill Bessie, an Urubu
daughter out of Marstonmill Nicolette, a Jupiter daughter. This 2006-born cow sold with a
heifer calf at foot by Marstonmill Ellis. Buying her was R T Ward, Pickering, Yorkshire.
Second at this price was Marstonmill Dolly, an Urubu daughter out of Marstonmill Sally, a
Kiniston Noah daughter. She sold with a bull calf at foot by Ellis and was bought by M
Conneally, Kenilworth.
And the final 2000gns bid came for the 2011-born bull Marstonmill Gordon. This Budore Earl
son is out of Marstonmill Diamond, the sale leader at 2200gns. Buying him were R and S
Kinghts, Diss, Norfolk.
Non-dispersal trade
On the same day the market hosted its usual commercial breeding cattle entry which
peaked at 5500gns for a British Blue bull, Kersey Guinness from the Partridge family, Suffolk.
This Mountjoy Utopia son is out of Kersey Velvet, a Kersey Punch daughter. He sold to J and
C Mayer, Staffordshire.
Then at 4000gns was the pedigree Limousin stock bull, Haltcliffe Gold, from the Blaxell
family's commercial suckler herd dispersal. This son of Procters Commander is out of the
Cloughhead Umpire daughter Haltcliffe Dawn and was bought by E T White and Son,
Staffordshire.
A pair then sold at 3800gns, with the first being Killcastle Dael, a Mas Du Clo son out of
Millbrook Monique, a Broadmeadows Cannon daughter. He sold to R A Wilson, Louth.
The other to make this money was the British Blue bull Norton Gunsmoke, a Ty Isaf
Diamond son out of Atok Diara, a Wilodge Brutus daughter. He was bought by C D C Farm
and Machinery, Spalding.
The dispersal of John Blaxell's commercial suckler herd saw a strong demand for well bred,
well presented cow and calf outfits, selling to a top of £1820 and passing £1600 on a
number of occasions to level at £1400.82.
Cattle Averages:
Marstonmill herd 32 pedigree Blonde cows with calves at foot £1508.72, 17 pedigree

considering current finished prices.

25 month old steers to £1050.

CALF REPORT – 95
Auctioneer: Keith Miller
Mobile: 0780 1032847
A slightly increased entry of calves in terms of numbers but overall quality down due to
being a lot of small dairy bred and 2nd/3rd qualities forward, however Ian and Steph kept up
their reputation and still sold Blue and Charolais Bulls to £400, Bob Unsworth sold Limousins
Bulls to £285.
Best Black and Whites sold to just over the £100 mark but generally £60-£80 and real small
sorts £20 to £50.
In the Stirk section trade would be somewhat easier with returns in the finished section
playing on people’s minds, however everything found a home.
Messrs Westhall Lodge sold 7 month old Blue steers to £495, Messrs Tyson sold Limousin
bulls at 9 months to £495 and heifers sold to similar money. Black and whites sold to £26.

Sheep Trade
Alongside the cattle on Saturday, Newark Market experienced an electric trade in the sheep
section. While other centres have struggled to put numbers together and reports have
suggested a slip in the trade Newark bucked both of these trends. With new buyers and
vendors in the market on a weekly basis, Newark is fast making a name for itself as The
Midlands Sheep Centre
In the spring lamb section trade was topped on a p/kg basis by P and I Tuplin of Irby in the
Marsh with 39kg Texel lambs at 300p/kg and top grossing pen from W Wright and Sons of
Woodall Spa with 48kg Texels at £130.
A decent entry of Hogs again met a fast trade, as numbers seem to dwindle. Skinner Bros of
Melton Mowbray topped with 34.5kg Texels making 249p/kg. The same vendor also took
top spot on a per head basis, selling 56kg Texels to £123.50.
In the Cull Ewes Eastland Farm of Battle topped the Ewes with Texels at £141/head and Cull
Rams with similar at £123

Prime Sheep
Again a great turnout of Sheep again in all sections this week – Saturdays really have gone
from strength to strength. After the ‘Great Train Robbery’ experienced in a Market south of
here on Thursday you would have thought that the wheel had well and truly fallen off – but
not at all with Our SQQ Today 44p/kg dearer….. Work that out 40kgs x 44p/kg = £17.60 per
lamb x 40 on a trailer = £704 on the load. Please look at trade, and be a price maker not a
taker. Newark is well serviced road-wise and distance shouldn’t be an issue. Please call to

Heifers - 120 averaged 199.21p
For the first time in many weeks real demand today with all regular buyers much more
eager than of late to return an average of nearly 200p and 30 heifers over 230p!! That
makes the competitions top price of 222p look a bit sick and deadweight quotations look
horrendous!!
James Mills sold a marvellous load of handyweight heifers with Blues to 263.5p - £1238.45
with Limousins off the same vendors to 257.5p and plenty in the 240p’s.
Ian Wildgoose sold Limousins to 255.5p - £1182.97, Graham Mason sold Blues to 249.5p £1145.21, Nick Sansom sold Limousins to 247.5p - £1259.78 and 245.5p (twice), £1193.13
and £1045.83.
Ted Dawson sold Blondes to £1512.53.
Today E grades 240p plus with U+’s 230-238p and –U grades 218-228p, R grades sold from
208-217p and O+’s 198-204p and –O’s 178-186p.
Today a very fast trade indeed let’s hope it’s the sign of things to come and thank God for
live auctions we are the only ones who want to make more of your stock everyone else
wants you to have less.
