Name:___________________________________________________Period:____________ Date Assigned:______________________ *Date Due:__________________________ Photo Assignment 1: Technical Exercise Film: XP2 400 ISO/ASA, 36 exposures. (XP2 is Black & White film that is C-41 process meaning it can be developed with color film at any 1 hour photo development store. Digital: Digital SLR & Point and Shoot users MUST set their ISO to 400 prior to photographing. Project objectives: • To read your in-lens light meter correctly and choose the appropriate aperture and shutter speed for proper exposure. • To FOCUS the image sharply. • To consider the format of the picture and hold the camera appropriately (vertically or horizontally). Equivalent Exposure Experiments (in class): • Photograph a person or object outside. Set your aperture to f-2.8 (or the largest aperture possible) and use your light meter to determine the correct shutter speed. Focus carefully and hold the camera steady. Shoot one frame and proceed as follows: (PORTRAIT MODE) • Shoot the next frame with f-4 (or one stop smaller) and slow down the shutter speed by one speed. • Then use f-5.6 (or one stop smaller) and slow down the shutter speed by one speed. • Then shoot one at f-8 (or one stop smaller) and slow down the shutter speed by one speed. • Finally, take one at f-11 (or one stop smaller) and slow down the shutter speed by one speed. (LANDSCAPE MODE) Motion /Shutter Speed Experiments: • Photograph a fast moving object using a very fast shutter speed (1/250 or 1/500) to stop action. Read your light meter to determine aperture. (SPORTS MODE) • Photograph a fast moving object using a slow shutter speed (1/30 or 1/15) to get a motion trail. (PORTRAIT MODE) • Pan a moving object with a shutter speed of 30. Read your light meter to determine the aperture. (PORTRAIT MODE) Depth of Field Experiments: • Photograph a person waist-up with some background details. Focus on the person’s eyes. Use a large aperture opening (f-2.8 or f-8 or f-4). Read your light meter to determine the shutter speed. This will create a shallow depth-of-field with the person in-focus and the background blurry. (PORTRAIT MODE) • Photograph the same person, but now use a small aperture (f-16 or f-22). The person and the background will both be in-focus this time due to greater depth-of-field. (LANDSCAPE MODE) For the rest of the roll have fun, and remember: • Photograph a variety of subjects (people, nature, and architecture). • To take better pictures get closer to your subject. • The sun should be behind you when you take pictures. DO NOT shoot directly into the sun. All 36 Film/Digital Images must be completed and your memory card must be brought with images transferred to your I/drive on the due date for 20 points. Minus 5 points per day if late. © 2013 copyright North Penn High School Art Department
