Admission to the Honors Scholars Program
The Honors Program at Sinclair Community College offers the opportunity to experience an enriched
academic environment and promotes academic excellence among intellectually gifted, unusually creative
or highly motivated students. Honors course work is in-depth study where dedicated faculty members
work closely with the students in an open exchange of ideas.
NOTE: Students who are not currently attending Sinclair Community College must also complete an
application of admission to the College.
1. Evidence of academic potential (check at least one):
3.25 cumulative GPA on course work taken at Sinclair
Score of 90th percentile or better on at least two of the Accuplacer tests
High-school GPA of 3.25 or better (out of 4.0), or in top 10% of graduating class
Balanced combined score of 1100 or better on SAT, or 25 or better on ACT
Demonstration of special abilities or talents (portfolios, projects, awards, etc)
Completion of at least 2 Sinclair honors courses with an A or B

2. Essays:
Please submit a short essay (about 200 words) explaining why you would like to participate in the Sinclair
Honors Scholars Program. The essay may list any reasons you have but should explain why you are
interested, how your interest relates to your future plans, and why you think being in the Program would
enhance your academic experience.
3. Letters of recommendation (2):
Ask for two letters of recommendation from educators (high school or college) who can attest to your
academic ability and ask him/her to mail the letter directly to us. If the writer works at Sinclair, the letter
can be sent through campus mail. Recommendations via e-mail are also acceptable; send to
derek.petrey@sinclair.edu. Provide your letter of recommendation writers a stamped envelope addressed

4. Transcripts:
Please send or bring a transcript to the Honors Program office (room 10-339). Sinclair kiosk transcripts
are acceptable, but, if from another college, it must be an official transcript (with seal). If you are just
entering college, have your high school send us a copy of your transcript. You may also send in any other
documentation that you feel will help us make a decision.
5. Interview:
Near the end of the quarter you may be asked to come in for an interview with two or more Honors
Council members. The interview offers us an opportunity to learn more about you as well as for us to
describe the Program in depth. Please list the days and times that you are available for an interview:

The Honors Council meets quarterly to review completed applications, so students may submit materials
anytime during the quarter. Students are strongly advised to view the Honors Program website or to
contact the office to determine a specific deadline for individual applications. We will contact you by
mail once a decision has been reached about your application.
