Partridge Fall 2006 SAMPLE QUESTIONS FOR EXAM II The questions below illustrate the type of questions one could expect to see on Exam II. The exam will be 75 minutes in length. The exam will consist of six (with a choice out of seven) identification terms [30%], 20 multiple choice questions [40%], and one (with a choice out of two) essay questions [30%]. Keep in mind that you are responsible for material covered in the text, class lecture and discussion, and assigned supplemental readings. A good written answer is one that demonstrates command of the basics; an excellent answer is one that goes beyond the basics to integrate text, class lecture and discussion, and/or other things such as examples from supplemental readings or one’s work experiences. Conversely, a deficient answer is one that fails to demonstrate a command of the basics. Course Vocabulary. These questions will be based primarily on text material. Material covered both in the text and in class has a greater likelihood of appearing on the exam. Essay Questions. These questions will be quite similar to those appearing below. Students are encouraged to develop outlines for the essays, working either alone or with classmates, although no outlines may be brought into the examination. 1. “Union structure and government” refers to the organizational components of the labor movement, the functions and governance of unions, and how these relate to and involve the membership. Discuss: a. the structure of the U.S. labor movement, including the concept of union democracy; b. management goals and strategies; and c. 2. “A company that gets a union deserves a union, and they usually deserve the kind they get.” Evaluate this statement, including consideration of: a. individual voting decisions and union campaigning; b. management campaigning; and c. 3. Bargaining power determines where a settlement will occur within a “positive contract zone.” Discuss: a. factors that influence the bargaining power of management and union; b. the legal requirements of bargaining; and c. 4. A bargaining impasse occurs when the parties are unable to move further toward settlement. Discuss: a. the rights of workers to strike, picket, and work-to-rule; b. the right of management to operate during a strike, contract out struck work, and lockout; and c.
