NURSING ASSISTANT TRAINING PROGRAM
Course Description: This 6 credit course is a career and technical preparatory program
designed to assist the student to achieve certification as a Nursing Assistant in the
State of Nevada. This program is approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing and
follows OBRA (Omnibus Reconciliation Act) and OSHA Regulations. General
nursing concepts are combined with concepts from the physical, social, and behavioral
sciences to provide a foundation for the Nursing Assistant in assisting the professional
nurse in providing basic patient/resident/client care. Each student will participate in
the task-oriented practice lab as well as in the supervised clinical setting.

COURSE CONTENT: Lecture, Discussion, Videos, Lab Practice and Demonstration,
Clinical Practice at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center/ 1600 Medical Parkway
ATTENDANCE: This class is comprehensive and much accelerated. Students are
required to attend all classes and clinical experiences. If you will be late or if an
emergency arises causing you to miss class, please notify Linda Ranieri at 445-3296.
LAB BEHAVIOR: No food or drinks are allowed in the Nursing Lab. Nursing Lab
and all of the equipment is off limits. This could be cause for expulsion.
CLINICAL DRESS: Students are required to wear professional clothing (scrubs) and
white shoes, watch with second hand, notebook and pen
CLASS ROOM DRESS: Casual wear, no hats/caps. Cell phones on vibrate or turned
off
 Absolutely no texting in class. You will be given breaks and may return all
calls and texts at that time.
THIS IS A COMPETENCY BASED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM. ALL CLINICAL
SKILLS MUST BE PASSED AT 100%. ALL THEORY COURSE MATERIAL MUST BE
PASSED AT 75%. You will be able to retake any quiz or final exam up to two times if
the grade is less than 75%. Your instructor with the recommendations of the Clinical
Staff will evaluate your Clinical competency
Final grade:
75-79=C+ 90-94= A80-84=B- 95-100=A
85-90=B+

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
Assist the licensed nurse in delivering patient care as a C.N.A in a variety of
Health Care settings
Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and legal principles that guide the scope of
practice of the nursing assistant
Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation for the physical, social, emotional
and psychological aspects of the Healthcare consumer
Demonstrate verbal and non-verbal communication skills during interactions
with Healthcare consumers and members of the Healthcare team
Make applications to the Nevada State Board of Nursing to take the written
and manual exams to achieve certification as a Nursing Assistant
Course content: this is a 150 hour competency based educational program
consisting of:
Theory, lecture, discussion, videos, and handouts: 62 hours
Laboratory demonstrations and return demonstrations: 56 hours
Clinical experience; hands on supervised practice in a variety of skilled
settings at CTRMC: 32 hours
There will be four tests worth 100 points each:
1. First test on chapters 1-20 on Wednesday, September 23
2. Midterm test on chapters 21-33 on Wednesday, October 21
3. Medical Terminology test on Wednesday, November 25
4. Final exam, comprehensive on Monday, December 14
You will only have one week from the time you missed an exam to make it up
Quizzes: There will be two quizzes worth 50 points each
Quiz 1: chapters 33-50 Wednesday, November 18
Quiz 2. Pre-clinical test: Wednesday, November 18
There may be some fill in questions

Papers due:
Common diagnosis paper: you will be given a subject on a medical diagnosis.
This paper is to be two pages long, typewritten and put in a folder. You will be given a
handout to help with format. This is due Monday, December 14, 2009. This is a pass
or fails paper. No late papers accepted.
Well elder paper: you are to interview an elder or senior. This also will be put
in a certain form. You will be given a form to assist you. This is also due on
Monday, December 14, 2009
Work books are mandatory. You will be assigned the chapters to be studied
prior to the class. This is your homework. We will go over at the beginning of
class and correct. You may work together to study if you choose, however,
when we go over in class you may not be able to finish if you have not
previously done so.
Missed days. The first two weeks are crucial to the course. It is mandatory that
you be here and be on time.
If a student is absent more than two times that student will be dropped from
the class
If you have an issue that will run you later that starting time of class please talk
to me the first day of class.
Cell phones may not be turned on in class. You may put on vibrate and return
calls on your break. No texting in class please!
Breaks will be every 45 minutes to an hour and will be 15 minutes long

The dates indicated below will begin our clinical rotation. You will be assigned a
Certified Nursing Assistant at the hospital that will mentor you. You will do this in
partners to begin with. There are different areas of the hospital you will be assigned to.
Medical Oncology A and B. Surgical floor, Telemetry floor and sometimes ICU and
Rehab depending on their staffing and patient load at the time. We will not be
rotating into Pediatrics or OB as these areas do not usually take students. There will
be times you may be able to go to the ER, depending on their need. You are allowed
breaks and lunch times. You may eat in cafeteria or bring your own lunch. All 32
hours of clinical time must be completed. If you miss it must be made up at
Instructor’s discretion. If you cannot make it you must contact Instructor prior.
Rotations will begin on November 7.
