Management
In Nursing
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course explores concepts of leadership and
management through an examination of various leadership/management theories,
application of ethical and legal principles, organizational and resource management
styles, meeting consumer needs and delegation of nursing care. Emphasis will be on the
student demonstrating critical thinking in the application of the leader/manager role.
CREDIT: 3 credit hours

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Recognize the use of organizational theories in structures and environment.
2. Identify leadership versus managerial traits and functions.
3. Discuss fundamental aspects of the budgeting process including: productivity
measures in today’s healthcare environment.
4. Apply the concepts of conflict management using appropriate communication
tasks.
5. Identify and define the delegation process.
6. Discuss staffing resources including recruitment and retention of staff and the
allocation and evaluation of staff performance.
7. Describe collective bargaining, its legal structure and its role in today’s healthcare
environment.
EVALUATION AND GRADING: A point system is used to determine the grade in
Leadership and Management in Nursing.
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 75-79
D = 70-74
F = 69 and below
EXAMINATION AND READING SCHEDULE:
There will be 5 exams including the final.
Exam days TBA.
Each Exam is worth 12% of your grade or totaled as 60% of Final Grade.

40% of your Final Grade will be based on your answers/participation/responses to
Critical Thinking Exercises for each chapter. Each student will choose a case study from
1 of the 8 chapters and will post it in the Discussion Area of the Course Menu during the
week of the reading and prior to the exam relating to those chapters. Try to pick a chapter
that the other students did not choose. You can post ahead of time that you have chosen a
chapter so that no one else will choose that same case study. Answer the questions related
to that Case Study. They do not have to be long answers but must answer the question
and use complete sentences. No late Critical Thinking Exercises will be accepted.

Example: You should complete your chosen Critical Thinking exercise BEFORE
taking the exam covering Chapters 1 -8.
