CONTENT: This Reading or Math self-paced intervention program allows the student to strengthen their reading or math skills in a computer lab environment. The students can sign up for one hour each day, four days a week.

CONTENT: If you love birds and getting outside, this class is for you. We are going to spend as much time as we can outside looking for birds. We will try to identify all the birds that are singing, nesting and feeding at the school. If the weather is good, we will be outside. If it is too hot or raining, we will be inside listening to bird songs and doing other avian activities. It is not required but if you have a pair of binoculars, please bring them. If you have a bird identification book, feel free to bring that also.

CONTENT: Students will learn how a guitar works and how to work the guitar. Basic fingering and chord techniques will be shown. This is an excellent opportunity to see if the instrument is for you.

Students will be responsible for providing their own instruments.

COURSE: Hip to Knit Grades 4 - 8

1 Hour TIME:

CONTENT: You will learn how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Students in this class will learn to read a simple pattern. We will also discuss the history of knitting. You will be able to bring home a finished project and show off a unique, original design of your own! Whether you have knit before

5 and want extra help, or you’ve never picked up needles, this is an excellent opportunity to learn a timeless craft.

CONTENT: This cardio kickboxing class will get your heart pumping and your muscles burning! Each student will learn basic kickboxing moves such as jabs, uppercuts, hooks, and kicks while listening to energetic music. No special equipment is needed for this high-energy class and thee is no physical contact with other students. Please dress in comfortable workout clothing and wear athletic shoes.

CONTENT: This class is designed to emphasize the importance of fundamental strength training, proper spotting techniques, and correct lifting form. Ways to develop and improve speed and agility will also be covered. This class is intended to develop and improve proper mechanics in strength training, speed and agility.

CONTENT: This class is designed to improve the overall fitness level in the areas of strength, power, speed, and agility. Each session is split into two parts, a weight training session in the weight room, and a speed and agility session on the track. The goal of this class is to help Freedom athletes compete at their highest possible potential.

CONTENT: Students will explore the power of magnetism through a series of simple, yet revealing, hands-on experiments. After the basics, students will build an electromagnetic motor, investigate circuit board technology and create their own working electronic project.

CONTENT: Students will learn proper techniques when throwing, hitting, and fielding. Students will participate in scrimmages and play games against each other.

Nature Photography Grades 4 - 8

1 Hour

CONTENT: This class is an introductory course on how digital photography can be used to enjoy nature.

Students will make a digital photo journal of the local wildlife and plant life. They will also get introductory instruction on working with school’s digital cameras. Students can bring in their own cameras, but it may be difficult to download to the school’s computers for the digital journal.

CONTENT: Students will perform dramatic readings of stories using only their voices and faces. Students will practice together and read stories such as A Porcupine Named Fluffy and Dog Breath. Reader’s

Theater helps build oral fluency, builds reading confidence, and promotes teamwork within the class.

Throughout the course, we will create papel picado maracas, cascarones, and God’s Eyes (Ojos de Dios). We will also celebrate Day of the Dead and Cinco de Mayo. The course will end with a fiesta on the last day complete with food and different cultures,, they will also be introduced to basic Spanish vocabulary including colors, numbers, the alphabet, clothing, body parts, weather, and the list goes on! The goal of the course is to spark an interest in learning a second language while having fun at the same time!

Summer Transitions Grades 6 - 12

CONTENT: Open to students who have attended or will be attending the CD class in FASD middle or high school. Only students recommended by the teacher for summer instruction should register. This class will offer life skills that students will be able to enjoy in and outside of school. Weekly activities will incorporate projects, cooking activities and trips. Fieldtrips will be on Thursdays and will involve a flexible time schedule. Additional money may be required for some of the fieldtrips.

COURSE: Boundary Waters Grades 9 - 12

CONTENT: The purpose of this class is to offer students the opportunity to experience the wild regions of the

Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Before the trip, students will be immersed in challenging course work. The class integrates three distinct curricula areas into one summer school class: biology, physical education, and language arts. Students will be encouraged to keep a journal of their experiences.

CONTENT: Students will be active and engaged in activities that include rock climbing techniques and games, rollerblading, bike safety, and biking activities. Students will learn about safety for all of the activities as well as participate in a variety of enjoyable activities. Students are encouraged to provide safety pads and helmets and must have a head cover if they do not have their own helmet.

CONTENT: This class is designed to continue and improve the Freedom Irish Wrestling tradition of champions.

In the advanced wrestling class we will review the basics of wrestling and progress to advanced technique. The course is set up to work on skills and drills that will continue our success here in

Freedom. Any new prospective wrestlers are encouraged to take this class to prepare for the upcoming season.
