Abstract: The text attempts to capture, on the basis of available dictionary definitions, the meaning of the Czech words franchising and franchisa, as well as to comment on them from the etymological perspective. It further examines the various written forms of these expressions and their occurrences in the Czech National Corpus and other internet sources in Czech. The core of the text, however, consists of research on the pronunciation of these expressions, in which sound bites from the Czech Radio were analyzed. It is revealed that even though the expression franšíza (which is adapted to Czech orthography and is thus unproblematic as concerns pronunciation) has been listed for example in Czech economics terminology dictionaries for years, the pronunciation of the expressions examined in the present research is significantly impacted by English, causing a highly unclear situation regarding both the written form and pronunciation of both expressions.
