DUTIES OF THE POST a) Principal Responsibilities: Hepatology (Oxford) The post is for 12 months and based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Experience is available in a wide range of hepatobiliary conditions in a busy unit. Dr Chapman has a particular interest in primary sclerosing cholangitis and hepatobiliary diseases. Dr Colliers interests are viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although liver transplantation is not performed by the unit Dr Collier attends liver transplant clinics in Cambridge and there is a cohort of patients under joint follow-up between the transplant center (Birmingham or Cambridge) and Oxford. There is also close collaboration between radiologists, liver pathologists and surgeons and several multidisciplinary meetings weekly to discuss patient management. The interventional radiologists perform trans-jugular liver biopsies, plugged liver biopsies as well as percutaneous biliary procedures, endoscopic ultrasound as well as TIPPS stenting. Extensive opportunities are available in performing percutaneous liver biopsies and paracentesis if needed by the applicant He/She will be expected to supervise hepatology in-patients in a dedicated ward environment under the care of Dr Chapman and Dr Collier and assessing referrals from other firms in the hospital He/she will be involved in two liver clinics /week (general hepatobiliary disease and hepatitis clinic). There is also the opportunity to take part in joint specialist clinics such as HIV/HCV and cystic fibrosis liver clinics. There will be a regular endoscopy session, and the Specialist Registrar is also expected to participate in an emergency endoscopy rota There are two ERCP lists/week and opportunity to learn therapeutic ERCP as well as oesophageal banding and endoscopic management of gastric varices. Attendance is required at a weekly journal club, liver histopathology and radiology meeting . You will be responsible for organising firm meetings and take part in hepatology teaching of clinical students, nurses and MRCP candidates e) Administration/Management Organisation of emergency rotas in conjunction with the Consultants. Supervision of patients notes, and responsibility for discharge summaries. Organisation of waiting lists. General supervision of junior staff. 2. TRAINING AND RESEARCH: a) Training Scheme: The post will consist of one year in Oxford. b) Research: You will be encouraged to take part in clinical research projects in hepatology c) Facilities for Study and Training: Good Library facilities are available at the John Radcliffe Hospital and at other libraries in the Central Oxford Hospitals. (1) This is recognised for higher medical training in hepatology (2) There is a weekly Staff Round for clinical presentation and discussion. In addition, especially in Oxford, there are numerous postgraduate lectures, seminars and meetings. (3) Post-holders are encouraged to attend National / International Liver Meetings 3. SPECIALTY: Description of Specialty Services Provided The Liver service is run by Dr R Chapman and Dr J Collier . A parallel luminal Gastroenterology service is run by Dr S Travis. Hepatobilary surgical support is given by Mr Z Soonawalla and Professor P Friend. The Unit runs an endoscopy service for the hospital which offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. There are 600 ERCPs/year performed on 2 weekly lists. The interventional radiology is performed by Dr J Phillips-Hughes and Dr P Boardman.
