Richard Hull Middle School Gifted Accelerated Math 6 Syllabus 2012-2013 Connie_Derrick@gwinnet.k12.ga.us Textbook: Pre-Algebra (Holt), Practice Workbook, Holt Online Resources Course Overview: The student will be able to solve real world math problems, reason abstractly and quantitatively, justify their answers, model problem situations, and attend to precision. First Semester- number system fluency, expressions, equations, inequalities, geometry (area and volume), variability and distribution. Second Semester- rational numbers, operations with rational numbers, rational expressions, equations, inequalities, and solving ratio and proportional problems. Class Expectations: Students will be required to keep their assignments organized in a math journal by specific item numbers. Assignments should be written daily in their student agenda. In addition to class work, homework will be assigned on a regular basis. Students should check the online calendar nightly. Work must be written neatly (in pencil), legibly and include all related math steps. Make-up work due to absences is the responsibility of the student. Grading Policy: All grades in math will be determined by a weighted grade system. The Achievement grades will include tests, quizzes, projects, labs, and other graded assignments that reflect mastery of the material. The Effort grade will be determined by various homework assignments, bringing back items that are to be signed by parents, completion of work, work turned in on time, class participation, neatness, and other assignments that reflect the student’s effort as opposed to achievement. Long-term assignments, such as projects, may have an achievement and an effort component. Students with a test average below 80% will be placed in Accelerated Math 6 at the beginning of the second semester. Promotion Criteria to 7th Grade Students must pass four of five subjects for the school year, with Connections classes being averaged as one grade each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the four subjects passed each semester.
