Gifted Accelerated Math 6
Syllabus 2012-2013
Connie_Derrick@gwinnet.k12.ga.us
Textbook: Pre-Algebra (Holt), Practice Workbook, Holt Online Resources
Course Overview:
The student will be able to solve real world math problems, reason abstractly and quantitatively, justify
their answers, model problem situations, and attend to precision.
First Semester- number system fluency, expressions, equations, inequalities, geometry (area and
volume), variability and distribution.
Second Semester- rational numbers, operations with rational numbers, rational expressions, equations,
inequalities, and solving ratio and proportional problems.
Class Expectations:
Students will be required to keep their assignments organized in a math journal by specific item numbers.
Assignments should be written daily in their student agenda. In addition to class work, homework will be
assigned on a regular basis. Students should check the online calendar nightly. Work must be written
neatly (in pencil), legibly and include all related math steps. Make-up work due to absences is the
responsibility of the student.
Grading Policy:
All grades in math will be determined by a weighted grade system. The Achievement grades will include
tests, quizzes, projects, labs, and other graded assignments that reflect mastery of the material. The
Effort grade will be determined by various homework assignments, bringing back items that are to be
signed by parents, completion of work, work turned in on time, class participation, neatness, and other
assignments that reflect the student’s effort as opposed to achievement. Long-term assignments, such as
projects, may have an achievement and an effort component.
