Four area studies BAs are currently based in the History department, since their current directors are History professors. These degree programs are interdepartmental, have no capstone courses, and thus no UDWR. Member s of the Psychology department are considering discontinuing the Psychology BES degree program. I am told that the department’s assessment committee “concurred that it is not worth the effort to assess a (a very loosely structured) program that has perhaps two students per year, especially given that students who have a legitimate, well-thought out plan for a BES major in psychology would still be able to do so using Continuing Studies' ‘self-select’ option.” **Each LAST major has the option to choose to complete the UDWR in any department that was a sponsor of the Latin American Studies Program. Which UDWR to choose would depend on the student’s particular concentration, and could be negotiated by the student and the Program director. Latin American Studies is only in the History Department now because its director is on the history faculty; his predecessor was an anthropologist, and the program was lodged in that department. It needs to be made clear to all the departments who sponsor the program (i.e., Geography, History, Economics, Political Science and Spanish) that the UDWR option would be handled in this manner, so they would not be surprised if students in LAST requested to completed the UDWR course in their program. *** The UCWR course for the Political Science BA is correctly listed as POL 429, but the department has not yet determined the exact method of assessment. The BA program listed as “International Relations and Affairs ” is, I am told, actually called International Relations. The new course I have listed is apparently the correct course for assessing UDWR for that degree, but the new director needs to confirm these matters with the former director and get back to me [confirmed on 9/28/06]. -2– Office of Academic Affairs 8/22/06
