Deadline for Applications: 10 March 2000
The research project ”Determinants of Grammatical Variation in English: The Influence of
Phonological Tendencies, Complexity and horror aequi“ at the University of Paderborn,
Germany, is inviting applications for the post of a postgraduate research assistant in the
area of grammatical variation in English, to start from 1st April 2000. Our DFG-funded
research project, led by Professor Dr. Günter Rohdenburg, investigates variation phenomena primarily in present-day English, though also in earlier periods as far back as
Late Middle English. Among the factors determining grammatical variation, we focus on
three generally neglected ones, i.e. (implications of) processing complexity, (the avoidance of) identity effects, and the influence of phonological preferences. Methodologically,
our research centres around the computer-aided analysis of large text databases.
Applicants should hold a very good degree (M.A., state exam or equivalent) in English
linguistics and possess some background in functional linguistics and language variation.
Native speakers of English holding a degree in related subjects such as general linguistics or psycholinguistics are also welcome to apply. Computing skills (especially in computer-aided corpus analysis) would be desirable. Candidates are expected to be able to
carry out corpus analyses on a self-directed basis, as well as to engage in teamwork with
the other members of the research project. Their research will concentrate very largely
on those parts of the project dealing with identity effects and processing complexity.
Funding is limited to two years, with a probable extension of one additional year. Payment will be according to BAT IIa/2 (about DM 32,000 per annum pre-tax, not including
the usual perks). The successful applicant will be encouraged to pursue his or her own
research with a view to further qualifications (e.g. doctorate/habilitation).
To apply, please send the usual documents (CV, diplomas, references, etc.) to one of
the following addresses (e-mail or snail-mail).
