Introduction to Linguistics The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with the key subject areas and terminology of linguistics, to raise their awareness of the methods of linguistic analysis, to introduce students to the range of fundamental ideas and problems of contemporary linguistics. The course objectives are to review the status of linguistics as a science, to identify its relationship to other sciences, to analyze the philosophical issues related to language as an object of scientific study, to describe the basic forms of language existence, to describe language as a system of signs, to highlight the main range of problems associated with defining language units of different levels, and to describe these units; to consider the problems related to the classification of languages and the history of writing.
