General Purpose

This position is a uniformed assignment in the Communications Bureau. This position answers emergency and non emergency calls for service and dispatches public safety personnel as needed to serve the community. This position may act as a gateway to all public services within the City, particularly during non business hours.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Answers E-911 and non-emergency phone calls; dispatches police, fire and/or other response vehicles for emergency and/or non- emergency requests; broadcasts and/or monitors radio transmissions. Obtains all pertinent information and relays to appropriate sources. Maintains location of on-duty personnel and equipment in the event of an emergency situation.

Conducts all activities in accordance with Department Mission and Values, Rules and Regulations,

General Orders and established standards of the public safety communications profession.

Monitors the building security system and cameras. Keeps surveillance over officers with prisoners in the sally port, processing and mantrap areas. Observes prisoners in lock-up and reports suspicious activities to command officers. Acknowledges intercom transmissions and allows authorized personnel access to secured areas.

Maintains and operates equipment in the Communications Center according to the Department Rules and

Regulations, General Orders and established procedures.

Composes, types, and edits correspondence, reports, memoranda and other material requiring judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness.

Writes minor reports, including, but not limited to, Private Property Damaged Autos, lost property, drug intelligence, recovered autos/ property supplement reports, and warrant arrest supplements.

Maintains dispatch documents and records.

Inputs data in standard office and departmental forms, both manual and automated, also compiles and tabulates data.

Authorized to sign civil infraction traffic citations for those violations designated by the Court.

Assists citizens at the front desk. Uses judgment to assist citizens, referring information to the appropriate authority.

Scraps or auctions abandoned/impounded vehicles. Keeps appropriate records of impounds and sends appropriate notifications of abandoned/impounded vehicles.

Administers court ordered preliminary breath tests.

May countersign a cash bond and handles bond monies according to Department policy.

Monitors weather warning system and gives notifications as necessary.

Maintains arrest warrant files.

Maintains appropriate certification to operate the Law Enforcement Information Network and associated paperwork under the direction of the Terminal Agency Coordinator.

Peripheral Duties

May direct traffic in the presence of a police officer.

Serves as a member of various employee committees.

Makes deliveries or other errands as requested.

Maintains inventory list of operating supplies.

Performs other duties as assigned by any Commanding Officer.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

(A) Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent with specialized course work in general office practices such as computer keyboarding, typing, filing, and customer service. An associate degree in business, communications or a closely related discipline desired.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

(A) Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Windows operating systems; working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; modern filing systems, knowledge of police and fire departments, principles and practices of emergency services, phone switchboards, and use of mobile land radio.

(B) Skills in operation of listed tools and equipment.

(C) Ability to effectively meet and interact with the public; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to handle stressful situations.

(D) Verbal and written command of the English language. Bi-lingual and multi-lingual candidates are desirable.

(E) Must type a minimum of 35 wpm.

Special Requirements

No criminal convictions. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Tools and Equipment Used

Computer Aided Dispatch systems, telephones and cellular phones, mobile radio and portable radios, personal computer including keyboard, mouse, monitors and word processing software, Microsoft

Windows programs, copy machine, fax machine, shredding machine, intercom systems, security systems, telephone/radio headset, lockout tools, hammer, punch, and screwdrivers.
