PREAMBLE The Department of Public Health was established in 2005, when the School of Health Sciences, Kenyatta University was established. It brought together all public health programmes that were initially being offered in various schools and departments in the university to ensure more efficient training. These included Masters in Public Health, which was offered in the former Centre for Complementary Medicine and Biotechnology, and Environmental Health, which was offered in the School of Environmental Sciences. Our programmes undergo constant reviews in response to changing health needs, with a view to producing health professionals capable of meeting the new challenges. RATIONALE The solution to many current global public health problems require practitioners who are highly trained and specialize in specific aspects of public health. That specialized training should strive to provide the requisite knowledge base, inculcate appropriate attitudes and develop skills in collection, collation of information, formulations and presentation of views. It should also develop the capacity for independent thought, creativity, skills and competence in effective information dissemination with a view to finding practical solutions to public health problems. This is what the department aims to achieve. MISSION Production of specialized Health-care providers able to address the current human health challenges. OPPORTUNITIES The programme has the following opportunities that can be exploited: Availability of staff with training and experience in various fields of public health Existing intra and inter-linkages and collaborations Availability of information technology facilities within the university. Urge for sharing research findings with stakeholders OBJECTIVES To generate and impart knowledge, skills and attitudes that pertain to effective recognition and response to public health challenges. To enhance appropriate use of natural and human resources to promote good health and sustainable development. To promote health for all and prevention of disease through capacity building for sound management of health care programmes and institutions. MODES OF LEARNING A) Regular programmes B) Self-sponsored School-based Evening mode PROGRAMMES OFFERED The department currently offers: BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Mean grade of C+ at KCSE or equivalent with at least C+ (plus) in Maths/Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English/Kiswahili or C at KCSE with Diploma in relevant filed. In addition, candidates should have obtained a C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III in KCE with credit Pass. MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A holder of a 1st or upper second class or lower second class degree or its equivalent with at least two years working experience in relevant disciplines such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, environmental health, community health, health education,Nutrition, health administration and planning, and community health. MODE OF STUDY Regular Evening MODE OF DELIVERY The programmes emphasize practical learning experiences and uses the following: Practical, Fieldwork, Discussions, Tutorials, Audio-visual Aids, Information Technology Systems, Lectures, Seminars, Posters, Assignments/Term papers, Attachment/Internship and Research CAREER PROSPECTS The potential employers for graduates of this programme include: Government, Ministries, Local Authorities, International Environmental Health Agencies, universities/Research Institutions, NGOs, CBO and the Private Sector.
