Butte School District NONINSTRUCTIONAL OPERATIONS 8105P page 1 of 2 Bus Emergencies Bus Evacuation The bus driver will: 1. Conduct a practice evacuation once each semester. 2. Ensure all passengers know when, why, and how to use front and rear doors in case of emergency. 3. Be the last to evacuate the bus. 4. Contact the transportation department as soon as possible after evacuation. Students will: 1. Leave all carry-on baggage on the bus. 2. Evacuate in an orderly manner, those closest to the exit evacuating first (1st). 3. Move far enough from the bus that the numbers on the bus license plate are barely legible. 4. Remain in the evacuation area, under supervision of the bus driver. Bus Accident The bus driver will: 1. Evacuate students, if necessary. 2. Notify the transportation department by radio if within radio range. If radio contact cannot be made, notify the local law enforcement agency by the most expedient means. As soon as possible, notify by telephone the transportation department or the mechanic on call for the transportation department. The mechanic on call will immediately notify the director of transportation. The director of transportation will determine the course of action. 3. Remain at the scene of the accident until released by the law enforcement agency. 8105P page 2 of 2 4. If evacuation is necessary, follow the above evacuation procedures. Students will: 1. Remain calm and follow directions of the bus driver. 2. If evacuation is necessary, follow the above evacuation procedures. BUS ACCIDENT NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES: In case of a bus accident when students are on the bus, the driver and monitor have a responsibility to supply the transportation office with a list of the first and last names of all students on the bus and to report any injuries reported to them. The transportation office will supply the list, including the address of each student, the school of each student, the insurance companies, and the police department, and send to the parent/guardian of each student a form letter (Form 8105F) including the following information: 1. 2. 3. 4. Date and time of accident; The District insurance company’s name, policy number, and telephone number; Name, address, telephone number, insurance company and policy number of any other involved party(ies); and A statement providing the office telephone number of the transportation department for further information, if required.
