Oriel College, Oxford Job description – F/T Assistant Librarian Job Title: Assistant Librarian Main purpose of job: To assist the Librarian with the day-to-day operation of the College Library. Relationships: a) Responsible to: The Librarian b) Responsible for: Junior Library staff c) Liaison with: Fellow Librarian, Fellows, College staff, and all library users. Main tasks of job: Deputise for the Librarian in her absence Reader services: Enquiry work Assist with reader induction and education Assist with supervision of external readers Oversight of the Library email account Manage Library statistics (and fines if introduced) Circulation: Responsible for electronic circulation system Manage late returns, invoices for lost books etc. Share responsibility for membership management Manage OLIS Circulation set-up (calendars, loan allowances, vacation parameters etc.) Serials: Manage journal claims in conjunction with student helpers Manage binding consignments Manage invoicing Acquisitions: Share responsibility for receipt and invoicing of stock Liaison with tutors over purchases/funds/book suggestions Manage claims (including liaison with suppliers) Accession gifts Standing orders Cataloguing: New acquisitions Retrospective work Database maintenance Classification: New acquisitions and corrections Re-classification projects when possible Library web pages and VLE presence: Aid design; share review and management of content 1 Stock check: Documentation writing: Assist with writing policy documents e.g. Staff manuals and reports Discipline: Other clerical and manual tasks as directed by the Librarian Have regard for the security of the College, reporting any suspicious activity or occurrence Maintain health and safety standards of staff, paying due regard to the College Health and Safety Policy in all areas of responsibility Assist with planning and supervision Check error reports Manage Missing book records Assist with purchase of replacement items Share responsibility for discipline within the Library Check security alarms The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your changing role within the College and the overall academic and business objectives of the College. 2
