Job Description Job title: Department/School: Grade: Location: Faculty Librarian Library 8 Library Job purpose The Faculty Librarian is one of three such posts, supporting the three Faculties of the University. As a member of the Library’s Senior Management Team you will assist in the development of Library policies and planning. You will represent the Library as a member of University committees and at external events and are expected to maintain the highest standards in the execution of your duties. The main areas of responsibility are: i) ii) To assist in the work of Academic Services in planning, standardisation and effective exploitation of library resources for the benefit of the University Community. To act as Librarian to one of the three Faculties within the University of Bath, with specific subject responsibilities for one or more Departments as directed by the Head of Academic Services. Staff management responsibility The Faculty Librarian has managerial responsibility for the library staff working on their faculty floor as part of their faculty team, who are usually professionally qualified librarians. From time to time they may also host and support work placement students seeking experience in an academic library; or supervise other members of library staff supporting a particular area of work. Career and Professional Development Activities The Faculty Librarian is required to keep abreast of trends in higher education, librarianship and information science, and relevant developments in IT, e-resources and information skills. They will be expected to develop links as appropriate with other librarians and relevant professional groups and be committed to their own CPD and that of others. Special conditions Chartership OR Fellowship with CILIP (or equivalent) Library qualification to at least undergraduate level Main duties and responsibilities 1. To ensure full liaison with library users at all levels. This requires daily contact with Faculty and Departmental staff to acquire knowledge of course development and research activity, and to meet enquiries in relevant areas. You should also keep colleagues and the Head of Academic Services informed of any areas of interest regarding library provision. You will be required to attend general University Committees and other meetings, and to maintain contact at Faculty level and with Departmental Library Representatives. 2. To maintain, develop, exploit and promote the collections. To co-ordinate and facilitate the use of networked electronic information services in your area. 3. To manage the expenditure of the materials budget for your Departments and Faculty. 4. To provide instruction in the general use of the Library and its resources (both hard-copy and electronic) to all levels of the User Community. 5. To assist the Head of Academic Services in the smooth running of the Academic Services Department, and in the supervision, training & development of staff. To manage the stock, library staff, and services pertaining to your Faculty. 6. To keep abreast of trends in higher education, librarianship and information science, and relevant developments in IT. To develop links as appropriate with other libraries and relevant professional groups. 7. To deputise for the Head of Academic Services as required. You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by the Head of Academic Services.
