Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 48 month fixed term contract as a Facility
Scientist in Proteomics / Mass Spectrometry.
Job description
The purpose of this post is to support the activities of research groups and to promote the development
of the proteomics / mass spectrometry facility at NUIG. Ongoing work focuses on protein identification,
post translational modification analysis and protein quantification. Current instrumentation includes an
Agilent 6510 QTOF LC/MS/MS, a Bruker HCT Ultra ion trap with ETD and an Agilent 6460 triple
quadruple LC/MS/MS.
The successful candidate is expected to develop protocols and implement a robust analysis pipeline that
will be used for routine protein identification, characterization and quantification. S/he will develop and
validate new experimental procedures, perform sample preparations and MS analysis for research
groups across the University, and contribute to data analysis. S/he is expected to closely interact with
technical staff and researchers from different teams providing advice and troubleshooting. The Work
Load Distribution for the Facility Scientist will be modeled on the following: 40% Research/40% Service
provision, Resource Management and Development/20% Training.
Applicant’s specifications
Candidates should hold a PhD or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience in the field of protein
chemistry and/or analytical biochemistry. Experience in modern MS-based proteomics techniques,
understanding of software packages related to MS data analysis, together with good bioinformatics
knowledge is required. Team working, organisational, communication and reporting skills with the
capability to meet deadlines are essential.
Starting salary:
€38,286 per annum
